finish on fiberglass rod

I have a couple of fiberglass rod that I need to do the finish. One has a green paint (True temper rod) and the other has what looks like a varnish on it (unknown brand), you can see the fiberglass surface of this rod.
I was reading old threads here where you guys suggested to use car paint. I will probably do it so on the True temper rod.
For the other one I was wondering if I could use the same varnish than is used for bamboo. What do you think?
And how many coats do you suggest for the car paint (I will use a spray can) and for the varnish (brushing)?
Do I need to remove the old paint on the True temper and if so How do you do that? Acetone? or paint remover?

Thanks,

Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Flyster,
Thanks for the info. I decided to go ahead with the varnish on one of the rods and paint on the True temper. I have the first rod half way done with the wraps. I hope to finish it this week and give it the first varnish coat.
