hello,
I’am getting ready to start my second rod A Batson RX7 seven weight. The first rod I finished was a kit rod from cabelas, it was a two piece four weight. On the first rod I found the spine by rolling it back and forth at a 30 degree angle on the kitchen table. It was easy to do since it was a light rod and a two piece. The batson is a much heavier rod and a three piece. my question is what is the most accurate and easiest way to find the spine. In a thread this summer I read that some people don’t even bother to find the spine anymore. Is this true??? If so I guess I will not even bother finding the spine :? what do you guys think??
thanks matt
If you can’t find it, it’s not important
I was able to find the spine on a 4pc Batson RX7+ 6wt that I recently bought by rolling it at a 30 degree angle on the kitchen table. It took a while to find the spine on the butt section but I did find it (I think ).
There seems to be a lack of consensus on whether or not locating the spine is important; some rod builders swear that it is others adamantly insist that it isn’t. Personally I try to locate the spine and use it as reference point to place the guides.
Do you mind if I ask where you bought a 3pc RX7? I wasn’t aware that Batson made the RX7 in a 3 pc model.
Have fun wrapping the rod
I have found the spine of a 4 pc 9.5’ 7 wt by rolling on the table (at least in the upper sections) but I would agree with dudley if that didn’t work. If you can’t find it I wouldn’t worry about it.

mosca,
I bought the three piece off e-bay. The blank was a couple years old the seller was just trying to move his inventory. I think he has a few more posted.
