This weekend I finally outfished my pop at his own game. He always kicks my ass dragging tubes on the bottom for smallmouth. With the help of a new crayfish/ tube pattern I have been playing around with I finally out did him with the flyrod.
The pattern was tied on a big salt water hook 2/0 with marabou for the claws and a body made of wrapped yarn coated with silicone and a lead dumbell at the tail for weight. Granted I needed the 8wt but it still worked.

Me too!!!
I always outfish my buddies with my fly rod. Just take some time making your streamers, and the plastic crap with the spinning rod will only get caught on the bottom!! LOL
A black woolybugger with mono eyes and rubber legs will outfish a stinkin’ tube any day. Just use a sink tip line, try it, you’ll like it!!
I’ve also been working on a crayfish pattern. I used chenille for the body and deer hair for the claws with dumbell eyes. I’ve not had much chance to try it out yet.
The bigger the better I find works best. All my past patterns were small and I tried to get them to “match the hatch”. So I took out one of my old tubes, had to clean the dust off the package, and tried to match a fly similar in size shape and color.
A friend and myself experimented a couple years ago with bait size and smallmouth. Needless to say we were throwing out saltwater plugs up to 8" long and catching more fish than with freshwater 2-4" rapalas

I was out on my local lake yesterday morning (9/18). I was in my little 14? boat and there were 3 guys in another boat. Beautiful morning and we were the only ones on the lake. One of the guys in the other boat was slinging steel and the other two were soaking worms.
When we both made it back to the landing they were asking how I did. I had kept 10 gills for dinner but caught at least 15 more plus I had caught 4 bass. They had one bass on a stringer, 17? (I don?t keep bass in water that warm) and one gill that I would consider too small.
They asked me what I was using so I showed them. An Al?s hopper size 10 with a biot midge dropper. Then they were asking where I bought them and I told them I made them. I could see they were a little bummed out so I gave the 3 hoppers I had left and 8 midges. I tried to explain that you really need a fly rod to cast them but they didn?t care they were going to figure it out themselves.
