Fighting Gravity SBS

Tom Larimer’s skating version of a Chernobyl. Original pattern calls for deer hair legs/collar, my black deer hair was pretty awful so I subbed moose body; seemed to work okay and the stuff is pretty durable. Change colors to suit needs; this could be fun to play with during a (name your favorite) stonefly hatch.

hook - Mustad 36890 #6
thread - MFC 6/0 hot orange
tail - Krystal Flash black
body - 2mm foam black & tan
legs - moose body

Part 1

mash barb, start thread at back end of return wire

clean, stack a clump of moose body hair, measure for length (let hair extend 1.5 hook gap past eye)

2 soft loops and let it spin (the hair may need a little help to make it surround the hook)

trim butts, tie in KF and wrap back; trim KF (gap x 1.5)

cut 2 foam strips (hook gap width) and taper one end

tie in even with back of hook

Part 2

tie in 2nd strip on top

brush some Super Glue on hook shank, move thread forward and create 1st segment; repeat x 2

trim tag end and cover with thread wraps

divide moose body and sweep back

Part 3

pull foam forward, tie down; double foam to create head

whip finish, trim foam, SHHAN

Even if you don’t have a steelhead stream nearby, toss one in the evening when the big browns come out to eat, or see if you can con a smallie into looking up.

Regards,
Scott

Not sure the moose will provide enough floatation to skate this as well as the original pattern intended, but nice tie & shots, regardless, as always.

Altho I don’t live / fish anywhere near a steelhead, I’m lovin’ these steelie patterns you’re posting, absconding w/ copies of all your SbSs . . . Much Obliged, and Keep ‘em comin’ !

Great colors for the big salmon fly…
