Hi,
I was wondering if it would be possible to put a fighting but on to my fly rod as to doesn’t hav one now. The rod i wanted to use is a eight and ahalf foot black beauty. Any input would be a great help.

Yes, it’s possible. You’ll most likely have to replace the reelseat though, since most fighting butts are made to go with a specific reelseat.

You can easily add a fighting butt to any reel seat that you can remove the butt cap from.
IMO the best way is to first remove the butt cap, then find a short piece of scrap rod blank that will fit snuggly into the end of your rod blank butt. This scrap piece can then be cut to size, a cork fighting butt glued on one end, then the assembled fighting butt glued in the end of the rod blank.
Dan Craft has decent ones $2 and up
Dudly is absolutely right on here. The key is to have a current reel seat where the end cap can be removed. I did this kind of thing to my 9wt, for when I originally built the rod I knew very little about various types of reel seats. The job was fairly easy to do and I soon found that a fighting butt made a big difference on the rod. Keep in mind though, the fighting butt now becomes permanent. I now always take a fighting butt into consideration during the planning stages of building a new fly rod and purchase a reel seat which has a removable fighting butt if needed.
Hey,
Firts of all thanks for the replies, as this is the firts modification to a rod i have done woul it be better to bring it to someonehow knows what there doing?

I’d say do it yourself.
It’s really quite simple. The hardest part would be fitting the scrap piece correctly.
You should be able to do it though.
If you don’t have an old broken fishing rod that you can cut up, I sure someone you know does.
Hey,
Thanks for all the great info, went out in to our garage this afternoon and found my dads old fly rod that i smashed in the car door last year and he said I could use this. I also found that this rod had a removable fighting but but it fits right into the reel seat so ill have to get a new one. The grip on my rod is foam anyone know of a store where I could get a foam fighting but preferably in canada? Anyway thanks agin for the info.

Just take a heat gun or hair dryer to the old reel seats and you can remove them and make a swap…
Hey,
Kengore thats a great idea but the handek on my dor is foam and the fighting but is cork, so i dont think this will look any good. Does anyone know of a good dealer in canada preferably that I could get a foam fighting but? Thanks agin,
salmon man
i hope that is not a boo rod, can be done but not easy. flyman 3
Hey,
This is going to show my inexperience but does boo mean bamboo and if it does ill be fine as mine is graphite.
salmonman
Yeah,
A bamboo rod would not have a foam grip.
No offence Salmon Man but for a rod with a foam grip, you can make your fighting butt out of anything.
Carve one from wood, find a rubber one from a spin rod.
I have a rod that I love, the fighting butt is shaped from a champangne cork
Works for me.
Hey,
dudley now thats not a bad idea i think that ill just use the cork one.
