FFn the Smokies in early April?

Plan to be in the area, western SC, and thinking about fishing the lower eastern slopes of the park. Fortney, Hazel… Any recommendations for books, websites, flyshops, areas etc.

Edited-added info— I’m very experienced backpacker-outdoors person.

Is not the sky a father and the earth a mother, and are not all living things with feet or wings or roots their children? Give me the strength to walk the soft earth, a relative to all that is!

Also interested here. I will be in the Seneca, Clemson area in the beginning of summer. My dad grew up there, but has not fished the area in 30 years. We are looking for the new spots.

Thanks.

I recommend Fly Fishing Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains by Don Kirk. Many consider it the “bible” of fishing in the Smokys. Superb book.

Little River Outfitters is a top notch flyshop in Townsend, TN. More importantly, they are some very nice folks that will be glad to help you.

It was like that when I got here.

I agree with choochoohotfish, Little River Outfitters is the best way to get started in the smokies. John

I wish you all everlasting flies and tight lines.

I love Deep Creek. there are some large fish in there. just make sure to hike above the Tuber put in. Don’t forget to look up Snowbird creek about an hour away from the park. I caught a 13" brookie about three hours upstream from the parking area.

I would recommend the book and map that Ian Rutter has out, or hire a guide for a day to help with the learning curve.

Picked up Rutter’s and Kirk’s books and placed an inquiry on the Southeastern FF board. Got park maps n stuff.

I was thinking of the creeks near and including Hazel but hope the crowds mid week aren’t too bad. Will check with Little River too as time approaches.

Thanks for the offers and replies.
