FFF and the Whitlocks?

Help me out here…
I just got a nice, glossy color brochure in the mail, courtesy of the FFF, selling a trip to Antarctica with Dave Whitlock and his bride.
What’s up with that? I don’t see any benefit to the club, just the travel agency and the Whitlocks (who more than likely ride free for putting this on)

Anyone want to do a free Argentina trip with me courtesy of the FFF? I’m sure they’ll sponsor us!

Antarctica? For real? As far as I knew there was no fly fishing down that way at all. Besides, the minimal torque factor of being so close to the pole would likely throw your casting waaaay off.

Jackster,

Hey, maybe the FFF simply wants to give the Bride and Groom a nice honeymoon?

Allan

Just like any club with a mailing list, they sell there list or let members use it at use it at no charge. I do it all the time for business, it allows you a target group that may relate to you or your service better than just a flock shot with advertizing. I would expect he paid for the list or the mailing. (but I don’t know that

Rich

I guess maybe if Dave brought his tying materials along you might get some great tutoring. Other than that, I don’t see you getting alot of fishing done. If I really wanted to spend some time with Dave and Emily I’d book an extended stay at their school. You figure at 750 a day (private day with both)you could book ten days and still be under the 8000 minimum. And that would be on the blue ribbon waters of the White River. Maybe if I start saving now…

Jackster and tyeflies–the Whitlocks are are a great couple to know–Not newly weds. They have been married for years. Yes it might be worth the trip if he brought his tying equipment. The FFF has never sold my mailing address-------

William,

I have about as much of a desire to go to “Antarctica with Dave Whitlock and his bride” as I have to have every one of my teeth pulled over a two week period and w/o pain meds.

“Yes it might be worth the trip if he brought his tying equipment.” I don’t care how nice a couple they are or the tying/fishing prospects, you’ve got to be kidding!

Allan

I’m a nice guy, and I can tie pretty decent flies. Anybody out there want to pay to go on vacation with me? Wouldn’t be anywhere close to $8000.

Yes, you would be seeing a small portion of Antarctica, the Palmer Peninsula which is truly beautiful but a long way from the pole. Probably 1500 to 2000 miles or so. Antarctica is BIG, about the size of the U.S. and Europe combined.

I fished from the deck of a ship in Mc Murdo Sound in 1957. I didn’t catch a dang thing but a friend hooked a 1000 pound seal that dove for the bottom. Scratch one smoked reel.

If I could go and be paid for it like on my three trips, I’d go in a heartbeat. For those who can afford it, I’d say go if you have the inkling!

Ol’ Bill

Jackster and everyone else–Whats the problem?? You making a big deal over the FFF and Dave inviting you on a cruise. Many organizations sponser a cruise. Many FFF members are wealth enought to enjoy a trip with Dave and they asked you to go along at a cut rate. Just checked a trip and low price $14,995 Twin cabin $20,995 suite $28,995–climb iceburgs kayaking whale watching with a stop in Argentina. Maybe Dave would give you one of his flies he sell for $35.

Bill

I’m sure they’ll add 18 holes of golf on the Antarctica ??? Now how to get out of a slush trap !!! You rich yuppees can keep it, & leave the quality streams to the rest of us !!!

Mine arrived yesterday. I’m having a very hard time understanding the association of FFF with this venture. Sure they added a few days of fly fishing at the end, but it seemed like more of an after thought. I have nothing against the Whitlocks, but I certainly question the FFF association on such a trip.

PAUL M If you really want to find out why the FFF is mentioned write to them–operations@fedflyfishers.org

William, Fill me in. Last I heard Dave and his wife Joan had split some years ago. She was getting into being an agent for FF speakers and she certainly had a few choice words for Dave. Is this maybe a second wife? Or,… did they get back together? From your post you seem to know them quite well and I thought I could get the straight and skinny on this…Thanks…Bob

Aaaaaaaaand I guess that is what he defines as hoppertunity !!!

Dave and Emily have been together since 1991 and the latest word is that he may return to his home state of Oklahoma. Joan Whitlock, Joan Salvato Wulff (new married name) and Maggie Merriman are involved with International Womens Fly Fishers. Joan Whitlock does have the Speaker Bureau for fly fishers.
