I’m looking to tie up some small BWO dry patterns - say around a size 24. Currently I’m planning to tie a comparadun style and may also tie a compar-emerger as well.
I’d do a classic Catskill style fly but don’t know if I have hackle that small.
What are some of your favorite BWO patterns in this size?
That is a bit smaller than I usually tie anything, but all my BWOs these days are a simple CDC tie.
Hook: TMC 900BL or 2487/88
Body: olive dun 8/0 uni
Wing: natural CDC

I know I would have a tough time dealing with deer hair on that small of a hook, not to mention that the diameter of one hair would be about the same as the hook shank. I like DG’s CDC idea because of the lack of bulk at the tie in area. Maybe a CDC Comparadun instead of deer hair or just a thread bodied parachute since you have a little more leeway with the hackle size on parachutes.
Or use the “Snickers Bar Theory” and toss a #10 Stimulator instead!
