'with the economy continuing to bog down i am looking for a more reasonable hook brand than the premium hooks. I know you get what you pay for but i am sure some are better than others.
Which brands are the “premium” brands?
I find GREAT differences in prices from supplier to supplier…as much as 2 times as much
I’ve been very happy with the Hook & Hackle Company hooks. They run about $10 per dozen (depending on model) and have most of the same models as the leading hook maker.
Some good discussion here:

I like Dai Rikis and you can find good deals for them on EBay.

The New Mustads are nice, buy a pack at $5.95 for 50 you might not go back to the “premium” hooks

I get the majority of my tying hooks in bulk here:
They run around $70/1000 hooks and he lets you assort by hundreds of a style/size.
Good selection of styles, hook quality has been excellent, and the shipping is cheap.
Plus he’s a nice guy to deal with.
I do consider these ‘premium’ hooks though. Side by side they look and behave just like the really expensive ones and since I can’t tell the difference, for me there is no difference…

Mustad signature hooks are the Best for the money, easily. Mustad’s been around since the 1870’s for good reason.
I will soon start carrying them in my fledgling store (online & ebay). I hope to beat the $12 per 100 price barrier on standard nymph & dry hooks.
MFC (Montana Fly Company) hooks are excellent too. They sent me some samples, and I abused them and they took it quite well, then started stocking them immediately. Nymphs and Dries run $3.00 or less per 25 pack. 100 packs are an even better deal, but I don’t carry them (yet).
If you (deepcreek, or anyone else) like Dai-Riki’s, you’ll like Togens. I have both, and the nymph hooks look and break identically. (50% of them broke when I flattened the barbs or very carefully adjusted the gap, whether in the vise or on the water! both brands). The dries didn’t do that though. I haven’t been able to compare any of the other hook styles from these two companies. I may have gotten a ‘bad batch’, but I don’t intend to buy any more. (Once bitten, twice shy) I will be auctioning them off on eBay.
Seriously, the D-R’s and Togens look exactly the same.

While I would not in any way shape or form consider Mustad a Non-premium hook…they are more affordable. I tie amost exclusively with them.
You can get excellent Eagle Claw hooks if you want the lowest prices.
Mind you…I never met a Tiemco, Daiichi, Dai-riki…etc…hook that caught fish any better than any other hook. Maybe fishermen…but not fish;)
Right now Hook/Hackle is running a sale on Mustads. I checked the 94840’s and they are $6.43 / hundred!!!
go to hook and hackle, met Ron this weekend, spent several hours with him Great Man, he told me he is in fact having a major special on hooks
If you need a cheap hook in a lot of styles, The Fly Shopin Redding, CA sells them for less than $3/25. As with all cheap hooks, not the best quality, but they will hold a fish, although I cannot vouch for the big game stuff yet (i.e. saltwater & steelhead irons).
Thank’s Buddy for the link on the bulk hook’s. I’ve been following this thread with the same question and have been looking for a place to buy in bulb but be able to mix style’s and size’s. Some of the hook’s out there that $5.00 for a pack of 25 are just getting a little to pricey these day’s.
