I’m looking for a favorite Midge pattern. Anyone want to share thiers?
The one I was introduce to in Missouri that works well for me is called " Harvest Midge"
Hook-TMC 2499SP-BL Size 16
3/32 Black tungsten Bead
Danville’s Flymaster waxed thread 6/0 (rust color)
Black ultra wire
Ultra easy to tie;
Put bead on hook (hardest part of fly to do)
Wrap thread as you tie in the wire
I make several wraps to create a tapered body
wrap and space wire evenly and tie off behind bead.
Fish it middepth in the water collumn.
It can be dressed up a bit, but the fish seam to mind the way it is.
Good fishing to everyone.
I fish a few midge patterns, but my favorite is probably a midge pupae,
Thread: black
Body : tying thread, tied around the bend
tail : white hackle fibres (slanting down)
rib : fine silver wire
thorax : red band of floss
Head : peacock hurl
Breathing filaments: white hackle fibres (sticking up out of hurl) and cut short
hook: #12
thread: black 140
body: black thread
rib: midge blue dun crystal flash
Thorax: UV Purple Crystal Flash
Wingbuds: Amber Swiss Straw with Red marker to color lower half.
Use super glue over whole body make sure to drop glue on red marker parts first and smudge it towards the head of the fly to “bleed” the ink forward. Coat with 2 coats S-Hansens. Its hard to get a good photo so i wont add one.
Hate to disagree, but for me a bare red hook beats a griffiths gnat. Very poor pattern in my experience. Taks Biot midge has performed much better for me.
Mine would be the Zebra Midge with a glass bead head and a body made from black and clear jelly rope with a tuft of white poly at the head. Its easy to make , very durable and catches fish. Its my go to fly.
I’ve got several favorites, and here are some of my favorite tiny flies.
easy to tie but the fish loves it! Here are some examples.
or this one…also easy to tie.
or…what about this one? just only two materials what is needed for tying but sometimes the best tiny fly you can imagine…
