Has to be Sea Run Cutts, first, because they enter our coastal rivers, before the “big boys” show up!
Then, the Steelhead come calling and all “hooey” breaks loose, until it’s about time for spring fishing to begin.
VERY FEW fish, (in fresh water), can equal the wild ride that a Steelhead, fresh in from the salt, can provide on a fly rod!
Your fly line’s of course, important, with these fish but it’s one of very few, that also makes you glad you’re using the right, strong enough, backing and PLENTY of it too. To have a bright as polished steel fish, run you into the backing on a small stream or river, then tail dance and/or, completely clear it’s 20 some inches of its length on 3 or 4 jumps, before coming to the net, is unequaled,( to me, anyway), for “fall fishing favorites”!!
Right now, my answer is Eagle Lake Trout since that’s what I was fishing last week and caught a new personal best (21"…which is on the small side for Eagle Lake).
If I catch something bigger on my next outing, it will be my new Fall Favorite… :lol:
