This is, I think, a very informative short video of Rene Harropp discussing his Transitional Dun and its importance in fly fishing.
I believe he came up with the series in around 1991 or so.

Byron, when someone I respect in tying says he saw something of value in the hatch, and its something that I saw as well…then I know I wasn’t crazy. That period of the hatch was the light that snapped on for me when I first tied the LTD. A fly that remains my most productive pattern year after year. One from the PMD hatch in Montana and one from the Sulpher hatch in Central PA, but nearly identical observations made. Thats a perfect example of why I remain amazed with fly fishing and tying. Thanks for posting. Ralph
Ralph,
I see Rene nearly every day each summer., during the couple weeks I’m there. He’s one of my tier heroes. He checks the water at the headwater of The Ranch nearly every day and stops in at the Trouthunter for iced tea.
Though famous, he’s very approachable.
I usually, correctly or not, refer to them as “emergent” duns…beyond an emerger, but not yet a dun.
