Experiment

Just another fly experimenting with different material giving this fly a ghostly appearance… I call it Ghost Minnow… Any thing I can do to improve on it ?

I like it.

If say, “I” were to rip off your pattern, I would probably extend the top hair all the way over the white.

What’s it made of?

The body is made of some hind of mylar… It had some string and wire on the inside that i had to get out and the tubing is a bit thicker & stronger than the standard mylar tubing… Overwing material is Neer hair and congo hair sparsely tied in… Couldnt make up my mind on the eyes wether to use red or silver hollographic so i put 3 of each in a box & shookem up… had my wife get one out without lookin & used what she pulled out… I tied the fly using scrap left from other flies ive tied… If i have cutoffs from a fly that is 2" or longer they go into marked small boxes… The top hair i wish was longer but thats all i had of that colour… Got more ordered anyhow… It would probably be a good lake or clear water stream patern to fish… Another thing i noticed that could be done to improve this fly would be to use a white thread on the head and use a marker to colour the top of the head the same colour or just a little lighter colour than the top hair ?

i would have used pearl mylar piping and white thread to keep wiyh the “ghost minnow” theme

how does that correlate to the mickey finn title of this thread?

Hahaha, it doesnt… i was in a conversation about a mickey finn fly & ended up typing that in the title before i realized it… wish i could change that but dont know how…

Easy, just tie a RED AND YELLOW one…then you will be good…

Gill slit…

 That is exactly what I was thinking too.

Hang it off a fish lip.

Bugman,

Other than lengthening the top wing (as others have suggested), the only ‘improvement’ that I can recommend is a change in thread.

You can get (you probably already have) clear mono ‘sewing thread’ at a fabric shop or Wally World. If you use that, the tie down point at the rear of the mylar will still show gold…and at the head it will allow the colors of the materials to show through, giving you that dark top/light underside without resorting to markers…speed things up and it looks really nice.

Did you weight the body?

Buddy

i did tie in a peice of solder wire underneath the hooks shank to help the mylar hold the shape i wanted… not intended to be weighted but technically it is weighted because of the solder wire…

good idear on the clear monno… i have it from the sewing department of wallyworld but use it as ribbing on some flies… havnt thought of using it for actually tying a fly…
