Yesterday i was getting strung up to fish the caney when i noticed that 4 of my snake guides on my FLY LOGIC rod’s epoxy is cracked and peeling up. I thought to myself i need to send that in for repairs since thats why i bought a rod with a lifetime warranty.
I was fishing it something felt wierd. It felt like the top section had come undone as if i hadn’t put it together well enough so i pull my line in and my rod has broken in the middle of the tip section. So i call Fly Logic today and they tell me that it is gonna cost $75 to fix the rod. I think the 75 is to cover their costs+ . I asked if i had sent it in yesterday before it cracked just to fix the wraps would it’ve been $75 and he said yes. That just seems excessive for rewrapping four snake guides.
The rod only cost me $150 new. If i send it in and it randomly breaks again they’ll want me to drop ANOTHER 75 bucks to do any (even minor) repairs. Should i just say forget FLY LOGIC and get another brand without the high warranty “fees” or is this standard fair?
Also any recommendations on a 9’5wt with a REAL warranty for around 75-150 dollars. sorry if i’m ranting it is just that my only rod is now broken and i feel very dissatisfied with my customer service.

I am glad to hear your rant so I can avoid that manufacturer in the future.
Though it is a little more than your price range, here’s a US source that has them all beat in the warrantee area. It is a lifetime warrantee that travels with the rod. That’s right! If you pick up one of these in a garage sale, you get the lifetime warantee. They are up front about the handling cost, $20.20. http://www.grandtrods.com/rodspecs.htm
I have one of their spinning rods. Though I have not broken it yet, I know from others that they replace the broken rods quickly.
I agree that $150 should get you a warrantee that covers more than 50% of what the rod costs. Gotta read the fine print I guess.
That seems a bit excessive. Sage and Winston charge a $30 flat rate for repairs, apparently to cover shipping. I would spend just a bit more and go with a Sage Launch, or a St. Croix Avid.
I was looking over my neighbor’s new Cortland and it had a lifetime guarantee. I think he said shipping and handling was all the label said. He is great at keeping those things in case some company gives him some static. He had a file drawer full of labels, store rec., and even the direction booklets. LOL… yeah, as if he ever sat down and read them before plugging stuff in.
Just a question, but doesn’t Elk Horn charge a little more for repairs?
Anyway, my recommendation is TFO Pro series, but only cause I have one, love it. Never tried the Cortland or St Croix so don’t disregard them.
I certainly agree with the displeasure of thinking you had a full warranty and then being hit with a $75.00 cost. No argument there.
I do want to say, in all kindness, this has been heavily promoted as a family forum, one that parents or grandparents in my case, can let their children/grandchildren read.
What do I tell my grandchildren the extra “F” was for? Should I tell them it was a stutter?
Jim Sentell is offering a Brand New Fetha Styx’s Predator Series 9’ 5wt. 4 piece rod on the for sale board for $125 SHIPPED. That Fly Logic rod you owned and this rod are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
He acquired this rod from me and I will tell you that at that price, it’s not a deal, it’s an absolute steal!
That is a Custom rod, built by a Master Rod Smith who stands behind what he makes, you will not be disappointed, Period!
You want to know about that rod, look at it on the website. Still have questions, call Jim at Fetha Styx, he answers the phone. Now that’s customer service!!!
I’ve sent my 10 year old Orvis Silver Label in twice to have broken tips repaired and all it cost each time was my shipping cost (no return shipping costs). Granted it is not a “lifetime” warranty but if I don’t have a new rod in 25 years, someone should check my head!! As was previously stated, you can get a decent rod for the $75. I wouldn’t want to deal with a company that a “full” warranty still costs you $75.
I bought a Winston Ibis and the tip broke just above the ferrule, and I then noticed a crack in the lower mid section. I sent it back to Winston, and rec’d a letter stating that there would be a $30 “shipping and handling” fee. I called the company, and spoke to a guy named Kevin, who laughed and said"Everybody does it, and it’s on the warranty card", I asked him to look at one. He than replied that nowhere on the card does it state that. and that he would take it up with the boss.
It’s not the 30 bucks, it’s just that it was a blindside, and I will not buy any Winston rod again. I also own Scott rods, and when I contacted them, they sent me a warranty card that must be sent in when a rod needs repairing, and it states that there is a 20.00 fee, so at least you know what’s coming.
So it ended up costing over 42.00 for shipping and handling including my cost of shipping it out there.
On the upside, they did ship the rod back 2nd Day Air.
I think I will look long and hard at the warranty of any rod I buy in the future, and I will look at custom builders as was mentioned in one of the posts above! Rob

Actually, I took it for a long drawn out ‘f’, as in ‘fffffffffffor-get-about-it’.
I don’t know Flylogic and I don’t think that I want to know them at all. They would be better off not offering a warranty than having that kind of rip-off arrangement. 8T
Just last night I was speaking to my brother-in-law who just got into fly fishing this year. He told me he broke the tip of his Scott rod trying to un-snag a fly from a tree. If that wasn’t bad enough he broke it again shortly afterwards in the car door. True story…honestly. You would need to know my brother-in-law to understand. He’s very klutzy.
Anyway, he talked to Scott rods and told them the truth and how he was an idiot and that it was his fault. They said they would replace it anyway…total cost to him $20.00.!!!
The warranty card that came with my Fly Logic Optimum rod clearly states the cost for repair. It is also detailed on their website.
Rip off or excessive? I don’t think so since the information was readily available and is clear in the product documentation. Some companies charge less, some close to the same, or even more in some cases.
I happened to win my rod in a raffle and would not have purchased it, but not because of the warranty cost.
The extra f is for frustration i guess. I think i am gonna get a tfo rod since my budget is extremely tight on my blue collar wages. I dont feel that paying another 75 is worth the risk of having to pay it again for a total of 300 for a rod. If i had that kind of money to spend of a rod i would have bought a more trusted well known brand.
beside the break the rod had over half the snake guides with epoxy issues. These rods are made in the US too, which is great, but if the next rod even has a single guide with epoxy issues it is another $75 to fix the one guide or fix it myself and void the ‘warranty’. (climbs off soapbox and goes back to cave)
