First, let me say that I am NOT a fan of electronic fishing aids. Part of the reason I love flyfishing is the simplicity.
This morning, I flipped the tv on, hoping to see a flyfishing show in progress. Instead, I got Bill Dance instructing fishermen(??) in the use of a damned “idiot box” (MY description) that apparently has a speaker that is put in the water & you can duplicate sounds such as shad & other prey of the fish you seek to catch, thus drawing your catch to your boat! I am APPALLED that a sportsperson would resort to such a lousy tactic…here in Ohio, chumming is illegal & if this is not a form of chumming, please correct me. I apologize for my rant, but IMHO, when & if we resort to tactics/equipment of this order, we are no longer “fishing”.
Pardon me, but this one P*SSED me off!..and apparently a full 1/2 hour show was devoted to it’s use…YES, I turned it off!

I wasn’t aware that “shad and other prey” made sounds that you could reproduce. Sounds as if it’s another $thing$ to “catch gullible fishermen” to me. I don’t think I’d worry too much about it.
I saw that on OLN also. BSX sound emitter. I thought it was a gimmick and was going to extremes also. Pretty bad when you have to do the “pied piper” to get fish. Guess he’s running short on sponsors . Notice how he always gets 4 or 5 lb. LMB? Same size fish every time? Chuckle .
Heck Bill Dance ain’t so bad. Actually saw him fly fishing for bluegills on his program once…way back in my fanatical bass fishing days. He was wet wading in what looked to be gator and moc water.
Then there was Roland Martin who took a 10lb+ bass on his show with a flyrod. If I recall he seemed to take a special pride in that fish. I do remember it being one of the few he didn’t kiss and release in front of the camera. Maybe it’s on his wall to this day with a brass tag stating “Flyrod - Okabogee - 1986” or sumptin like dat.

Chumming—the perch fishing on Lake Erie party boats improves when the drinking fisherman get sick.
My son had the job of shooting Bass shows–most had fish in the live well in case the bass wouldn’t cooperate. Put the fish on the hook, leave him run, start the camera set the hook and reel. I still notice it on shows like Martins big fish.
Now trout fishers wouldn’t do that-except at last season tournament shows. Those streams are private, heavily stocked before the filming.
Well Mikey, the good news is that 'Ole Tennessee Bill wasn’t giving instruction on the blasting cap technique!! And the blasting cap technique isn’t discriminatory! Catfish! Bass! 'gills! shad! it works on all of them…
I flipped the TV on while I was getting into FAOL, and lo and behold…there is ole Bill talking about that “BSX” and how the bass go crazy when they hear the sounds them shad make or when they hear a bass “crunching” a shad!!..wonder if they make one for trout munching on some scuds?..

I don’t know whats worse, Bill Dance’s show with the featured “promo du jour”, or Roland Martin’s “Product Showcase”, really sad shows-I can’t watch them anymore. I really miss the old shows like American Sportsman, and The fishin’ hole w Jerry McKinnis… just showed us good places and fish and friends. Not constant “in your face” ads…Bummmer…
Leo,
I’d rather see ol’ Bill Dance dynamitin’ fish…at least he wouldn’t be callin’ it “sportfishing”!..Hmmm, or WOULD he?
backbeach…I’m with you as far as missing The Fishin’ Hole with Jerry McKinnis. I saw his show once filmed on that year’s “hot” lake & he said the 5 fish on film were ALL he caught in 3 days & that there were no guarantees of success on any lake. I liked Jerry’s show & he did some flyfishing too…quite a bit with Coach Bobby Knight.

Speaking of good shows–How many are watching “Fly Fish America”?? I’m older than most on FAOL and watched them all and by far it is the best these days. The latest bamboo rod builders dad and son fly fishing.
I have to agree with you, Mike. I have nothing against fish finders. Matter of fact I have a Hummin Bird Smart Cast that I use on the still waters when fish are tough to find but all that does is tell me where the fish are at. It’s up to me and the fish to do the catching. As far as I know all fish transmit ultrasonic sounds to find prey. Kind of a fish sonar. I have heard it said that predatory fish home in on the transmissions of prey fish. For us to use a device to fool these fish removes us from the ranks of sport fishermen. Such devices may well have a good use in commercial fishing but not in sport fishing. It’s like the fellow hunter that tells me how hard it was to hunt that buck when all he did is sit on a baited stand all day. That’s not hunting or fishing in any way.

Gaddabout Gaddis
Turned me onto fly fishing 40+ years ago.
I remember his show for being the spark that ignited a passion when we only had 5 channels to clutter up our lives.
It would be intresting to find out if it works… Maybe a minni version that sounds like a caddis E- merger. or a stone fly talkin trash about a Able reel. lol (couldn’t resist)
