First off, let me say great site! There is alot of good information on here. I am new to fly fishing and tying. I have only been tying for a few months. I am getting ready to tie some egg patterns using McFly Foam and Antron yarn as a blood spot. Just out of curiosoty how important is the blood spot?
Here is the web site to the pattern i will be using:

It’s been my experience that the blood dot is just another enhancement to a pretty good pattern already. I keep both in my fly box and have caught fish with and without the dot. I guess I would simply say it doesn’t hurt to have a variety of egg patterns in different colors, with and without dots, just in case that’s what they want to see. Besides, it gives you a little more time on the vise to improve your skill and speed.
Last night I tied some up both with and without the dot. They came out looking O.K., but not great. Chewydog, thanks for that link, those eggs look really good, I think I will give that pattern a shot.

They don’t have to look good, be round, or even surround the hook.
I tested the eyeless eggs again today, got eight or nine browns and bows on them, and then tried that fluorescent orange San Juan Worm just to see how hungry they really were. And it worked too.
Which makes me think they are after color, not something egg-shaped.
