Easy casting 5 wt ???

Hi All,
My wife fishes with me a lot. She always says that my rod is easier to cast than hers. I think I figured out that I use different line than she does. I ordered a line like mine for her rod. The line I have ordered for her is the Orvis Long Belly Trout line. I have 2 and love them. They are easy to mend etc. Her reel is a Orvis Battenkill Barstock, silver in color.

I also would like to consider building her a 5wt rod that’s easy to cast. I think a fast action rods is not the ticket. What 9 ft. blank would you experienced folks recommend for a easy to cast 5 wt ?? I would like to put a pretty wood real seat on it as it would be her Trout rod.

I would like to keep it reasonably priced.

I have built one rod in the past. It was a 3 piece 7wt on a Scott Alpha blank using a REC reel seat.

One more note, she’s currently using a Sage DS2.

Personally, I LOVE St Croix SCIII (Avid) blanks/rods. You can’t go wrong with one, IMO.

My wife uses a Sage 389 LL, it’s soft action is very forgiving and easy for an inexperianced caster to use.

Rainshadow rx7 Is the way I would go, or maby a st croix 2 or 3

Wayne, youe from Belle Vista? thats up buy Beaver? and close to Bullshoals? you lucky man. Anyway their is a rod building shop in mountain home so you can go check stuff out if you need. let me find the website for it

Neil

Are you referring to Dorber?

no I found the name its schnieders http://www.schneidersrods.com/ I tried finding it the one time I was up that way fishing but I couldnt I forgot the number so I couldnt call them for directions, Anyway going over there would give you a reasong to fish the white

I like Cabela’s ‘Stowaway’ rod in the 5pc 5wt, feels great in the hand. On sale you can get a blank for under $40!

somethin slow

I am asking for blank suggestions. How would a Batson Forcast RX6 compare to a Sage DS2 ?

-wayne

Well … it would compare like a Pinto to a Porsche. Both have wheels.

That was helpful . . . . Would the Sage be the porche?

I had one suggestion towards an Rainshadow RX7 . . . I was thinking the Forcast RX6 would be a bit slower. How would these two blanks compare to the ST Croix line?

Sorry for the sarcasm … but you couldn’t have possibly attempted to compare two blanks of opposite quality and done a better job.

I would recommend you look at the St Croix very seriously … GREAT blank, period - but especially for the price, Mod-Fast. Made in the USA and backed by the BEST customer service in the industry.

Other than that, the TFO Professional is probably one of the better imported blanks and again in the same genera you require.

If you want to stay with a “fancy” name - the Sage SLT is a good blank again along the lines you described.

There are enough SCIII Avid rods in various fly shops throughout the country that you shouldn’t have any issue getting your hands on one to test cast it.

I highly recommend the SCIII line … I own them, fish them, build them and sell them and can’t say enough good things about the product, company or value received.

I have cast the Avid rods. I like them.

I asked about the Forecast RX6 comparison to the Sage DS2 because I own a DS2 and know how it casts. I had heard good things about the Batson blanks. I also have an Avid rod. It’s my son’s but I have access to it.

Just looked at St Croix’s web site. Noticed the Avid rods are not matte black anymore.

But I am still looking for a blank to build my wife a new easy casting rod. She’s fishing the DS2 now. Was thinking about something a little slower.

wayne

Slower than a DS2 … now you are getting into glass territory.

It might be best to take her shopping and let her handle/cast the rods before you start to build. Take care.

Wayne, the rx6 and the rx7 actions are pretty much silimlar except the 7 is a little more moderate fast then moderate, but the rx7 is a nice rod lighter more feeling to it now the rx6 is heavy hunk of unsesitive junk.

Anyway someone is going to come along in a second and tell you the rx6 isnt heavy and the rx7 is junk just a mater of opinion i guess. Oh sorry cant compare it to a Sage ds2 never picked one up

I’ve built on several Baston blanks and they have all been good. The Forecast is a bit mushy for my tastes and has a heavy feel, so I don’t recommend it. I really like the RX7 and RX8 blanks. Dispite what other’s say, they are as good as Sage blanks at a lot less money. My favorite Batson blank is the RX7+, but it is getting in the expensive range. If you like your Scott Alpha, you will like the RX7 or RX7+.

Also, I don’t really think you want a slower rod than the DS2. I have found that a medium to medium fast rod is much easier to cast for beginners.

Perch (from the forum) asked me to help his daughter learn to cast. I own a lot of rods (I don’t count anymore). I thought about a rod that would be easy to cast for a beginner. A rod that loads easily enough for the caster to feel it, a rod with a softish tip, a stiffish butt that could throw a good loop without a lot of work or lack of timing.

Alot of times I have to feel a rod out before I can persuade it to do what I want it to do. I tried to choose a rod that didnt need much persuasion.

I chose a Gatti IM6 8 1/2’ 5 wt.

I found out about the rod from Lotech Joe who had one at the Lowell fish in a couple of years ago. The problem is I dont think they make um anymore.

Perch’s daughter did a fine job that day…the rod did just what I hoped it would do.

Take a look at the Sage Launch rod. The action is what it sounds like you want and the “feel” is excellent. I like the rod a lot and will probably build with this blank when I get a chance. Most of the sizes come in either 2 or 4 pieces.

The Launch is fast action, he WAS looking for a more moderate action - the appropriate fit in the Sage line would be the SLT.

Unless you know something I don’t … you won’t be building on a Launch blank. Those are only offered as a factory build same with the FLi line.

I build for a living - my first choice would be SCIII. Absolutely the best bang for the buck. The SLT is a very good blank, but at DOUBLE the price … VERY hard to justify, I have cast both and can tell you which I would recommend the money be spent on.
