East River, Nova Scotia

The East River runs through my home town. It has a fall run of Atlantic Salmon as well. There are sea trout earlier in the year (sea run brook trout). Surprisingly, I only recall fishing there once as a kid. We always took trips further out.

Anyway, a few days ago I was back in Stellarton to visit my parents. Vanessa, Genesta, my Dad, and myself decided to head down to see if there were any salmon in the river. Took the rods and our licences, and off we went.

It’s a short walk through the woods to get to the river. Took us a bit to find the path, but eventually we spotted two fellows comming back up from their morning’s fish. They didn’t have any luck it seemed. Still, we now knew how to get down to the river.

When we made it to the river there were more fellows there. One was fishing a large orange dry fly, the others I couldn’t tell as they were up river a ways. However, the water looked good, and there was a good deep pool well within casting distance. We moved down river to some free water and started to set up. We only had two rods with us as one of us would have to attend to Genesta while the others fished. During the last month of the season you must use barbless hooks, so we bent down the barbs and tackled up. Vanessa looked after Genesta for the first shift.

We were fishing some wet flies, hairwings of various colours. Dad sat down and Vanessa took over that rod. Genesta watched us casting away, eventually she found a reed and she started to pretend she was fishing! Looks like I’ll be having another fishing partner sooner than I expected. Very cute.

There was a nice hatch of mayflies comming off, light cahill’s size 16 looked about right. Also spotted some black caddis of a similar size on the grasses by the water. Two small trout leaped to grab one of the mayflies, or perhaps one trout twice as it was in the same area, and that was it for fish. Apparently, two grilise and one salmon were landed the day before, but on Saturday, nothing. The run is often quite late in the East River, and some years the fish don’t make their run until after the season has closed in November.

But, hope springs eternal. See, this week, there is call for rain until Thursday. Friday is meant to be sunny, with overcast on Saturday. We’re heading home next weekend for Thanksgiving. I’m thinking, this fresh bout of rain may just bring them on their run. I might just have to take a look.

Jeff -

Sometimes no pics are better than pics. The image of Genesta casting her first fly rod is as good as it gets.

Thanks.

John

Great report Jeff, looks like Genesta is going to be into bamboo right from the start! Could be expensive
Let us know if you get another crack at the salmon, would love to hear if you get one.
Never managed to get out for opening but a friend did and pulled a 3.5kg rainbow out of the Ohau.
All the best.
Mike.

Thanks John & Mike. There are some photo’s somewhere, but I think they are still on the camera.

I am planning on getting out next Saturday, so fingers are crossed. There are some very big salmon that go up the East River. Anything over 63 cm has to be released, but under that is ok. The grilse (small ones) are not spawners, and have a low survival rate once they leave the river anyway. The big ones are just inches from the finish, so keeping them has a huge impact on the fishery.

Anyway, a shame you didn’t get out for the opening day Mike. A 3.5 kg fish is good though, but do you know how many monsters taken this year? There are some awfully big fish taken out of the channel on opening day.

Well, the rains came, and came, and came some more. Was down to the East River again last night and this morning. It was still raining both times. River, not surprisingly, was running high. Swung a few streamers around and explored a bit, but no takers. The rain has let up and stopped now. Hopefully will be able to get out tomorrow afternoon. If the water has gone down a bit by then, there is still hope. There is, after all, always hope! Apparently there are fishing running the river now. Unfortunately, with the water level up they are not stopping anywhere.

Hi Jeff, good to see you are still geting out for a fish, even in difficult conditions.
To answer your opening day at Ohau question I believe there were 300 trout landed in the first 2 days and the biggest was 17lb, what a monster!
Hope you manage a salmon next time.
All the best.
Mike.

Thankis Mike! 17lbs is a monster indeed! I, on the other hand, have had no monsters, or even little things that go boo! Was out for bit this afternoon. Beautiful sunny day. Genesta was baptised this morning, and we had the whole family together for a thanksgiving dinner (midday). I was hoping to round it off with a fish, but nothing happened. There have been a few fish caught from the pool I’ve been fishing quite often these past few days, but I’ve yet to even see one. Still, it was a wonderful way to round off a great day. The East River is very pretty this time of year, lots of fall colours and such. Must try and find some of the photos and post one.
