dying squirrel tails

Need some help on this … I’ve checked the archives and couldn’t find what I was looking for. I’m trying to dye some grey squirrel tails a bright yellow. I’ve used onion skins ( both purple and yellow), jello w/ some vinegar, and food coloring. The results thus far are pretty dismal. I know I can’t dye the entire tail yellow, But I figured the white tips should dye easily. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Greg

I have not used this on squirrel tails — but when I was a lad we used to make dies for Ukrainian Easter Eggs by immersing crepe paper in boiling water. The more crepe paper you use the stronger the color. That dye gets on everything and generally stays there. Let me know how it works on squirrel.

Folks are going to come on with some better experience than me…but it’s getting late …so…

I’ve dyed animal fur very nicely with Kool-Aid…haven’t done squirrel tails but don’t see why Lemonade Kool-aid wouldn’t do just fine…[just read the ingredients of the Kool-aids and go with the yellows]

There is a lot of info on this BB for using Kool-aid.

try adding a tbs.or two of vinegar to the mix it helps set the dye.
