Dumb Question

Folks:

What specific material is being used when a thread is called “mono”? I know the word is short for monofilament, but is this the same as the line you put on a spinning rig? When tying with it, does it come on a spool like other tying threads?

Thanks,
Hugh

There is monofilament line that is spooled for fly tying. There is also mono-cord, which is a 3/0 nylon thread made by Danville.

AND a few of us tightwads, who don’t know any better use monofilament sewing thread from Wallyworld.

Jesse,

Just a side note, and probably one that you probably know, that sewing monofilament is .004 in diameter. It comes in ‘clear’ and ‘smokey’ and both work pretty well as 7x tippet.

I have thought about using it as tippet but have resisted. I really think it is not consistently as uniform in its strength as fishing mono, I cuold be wrong on that. The smokey seems a little stronger than the clear to me.

Great! Now I know!

Thanks!

Glad I’m not the only tightwad that gets 7x from the thread aisle at 'mart.

I was born poor and never complete recovered, but I do have indoor plumbing now.
