what is a dubbing loop used for? is it something beneficial for warm water patterns?
Hi Jalama;
A dubbing loop is a loop of wire or thread formed to apply material to a hook,typically the body of the hook. See the fly of the week, it uses a dubbing loop and the tier shows how to form one.

Jalama,
I’ll take the back half of your question.
A dubbing loop is an extremely useful technique. It allows the creation of strong, secure bodies or overlays that are bulkier or where you want the fibers to ‘stick out’ farther than ones done with simple on the thread dubbing techniques. It’s particularly useful with longer fibered materials.
I use it for many warmwater flies, as well an a good number of trout and pike flies.
There are several different methods, and all are worth learning.
This week’s FOTW illustrates the method that I tend to use the most.
Good Luck!
Buddy
