The last time I was at a fly shop I picked up a tube of “super power fly floatant Dry Magic” made by Tiemco. It is described as a floatant for all kinds of dry flies including CDC patterns. From what I’ve read it’s a floatant made from preen oil, the natural oils that give cdc their ability to float. My question is this … should I apply this to the flies after I tie them or on the stream as necessary. I’m not sure how long it’s supposed to last. And, what’s the best way to apply it? Also, I wonder if it could be also used on snowshoe hair, another naturally floating hair. Usually a couple of false casts will dry out the fly enough to float but I just wonder if this floatant would also work on snowshoe. Thank ahead for any advice/insight.
Apply on stream. Use as you would any other paste type floatant, only with a broader range of material usage. Does work great on cdc.
Greg, thanks for the beads. Chewy is right about application, never used it my self, but I use this stuff made in Idaho called “Poo Goo” works on almost every thing. Personally I wouldn’t put anything on CDC, I’d just swap out the fly and let the other dry a bit. It’s a good way to make sure your knot is secure even after a few fish or a bunch of false casting.

I like the Dry Magc, but it gets my fingers dried out if I use it too much.
I wonder what the “natural scent” which masks human odor is? If it is the smell of duck butt, then it would totally scare fish, as another time they smell that is when merganzers are in the area to EAT THEM
