Dry Fly Box for Smallmouth - A Peak Inside the Vest!

There are three “episodes” of Fly Box Porn completed. Mike Schmidt showed his smallmouth streamer box. John Ridderbos shared his popper box. This time it’s my warm water dry fly box. I carry this box in late May through October when conditiions are right. Assembled primarily for smallmouth I’ve found bluegill, rock bass, crappie, largemouth and spots are all amenable to the selection. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Would you like to feature one of YOUR fly boxes in Fly Box Porn? Email me!

Thanks.

Nice stuff, Joe. Let’s see what i can make out… Are those Tom-Thumbs on the log? Or something-devils? (I can’t remember the full name?)

In the box I definitely see Trudes (or Western Coachmans)?

Goddard Caddis in pretty large size?

What else 'ya got?

Peter;

Each of the flies is pictured in a large size format (thumbnailed) in the article. Yes, you see Royal Trudes. The flies on the log are Cooper Bugs, also known as Devil Bugs in some areas. Typically a Devil Bug is tied in a much larger size. Goddard Caddis is a size 10. All the flies are listed in the article in the sizes I carry - for warm water work they are typically size 10 to 16.

Joe, I recently saw a great video online of some guy skating what I think he called buzzer flies (big white dries) during a pretty good hatch. I have to admit, that when it came to bass, only two methods occurred to me before: streamers and poppers (and maybe a dead-drifted dry fly). My (few) experiences trout fishing were that only the small dumb fish took a skated fly. But it’s definitely a method I’m going to try next season for the Smallies (looks like a great way to cover water as well).

Try this when the weather is whipping up. Good windy days will really help. Use a long tippet - and the material should be a bit stiff. Maxima is my choice. Hold the rod high and let the fly skate and bounce - smallmouth and spots lose their minds on that sort of thing.

Added that to my fishing to-do list for next year. A lot like my honey-do list, except I actually cross stuff off of it.

Very nicely done flies and good idea for single boxes for different fish. Liked the site also on your post.
