Dropper rig fly boxes?

Does anyone besides Orvis make a fly box that has a way of keeping dropper rigs from getting tangled. Not that the Orvis boxes seem bad, I just haven’t found any others and was curious as to what else might be available. I don’t plan on carrying a lot. Just a few egg/nymph combos pretied for steelhead. Sometimes its hard enough to tie one one fly with frozen fingers.
Thanks… Erich

Erich,
The Orvis box is the only one I’ve found. Here is an interesting Article; http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/techniques/monahan_seeing_double.aspx

I use to use (before Orvis came out with the box) a plastic tube “PVC” covered with Velcro. Lay the hook on the side of the tube and wrap the tippet around the tube securing both with a little square patch of the other side of velcro. I also found by putting the softer side of the velcro on the tube, it didn’t stick to everything.
You can make it any size you want, and even drill a hole in the top and hang it off a vest or fanny pack, ect.

Here is one from Bob Marriot’s Store; http://www.bobmarriottsflyfishingstore.com/detail.aspx?ID=20865

That is the Orvis Box. I have one now and they are a life saver.

Maybe Orvis is the only company that stocks them.

Looks like it right now.

I liked the idea of the Orvis dropper boxes, but not the price, so I made my own.

I purchased a bag of popsicle sticks and some 3mm foam sheet at the craft store. Cut the foam into strips the same width as the popsicle stick and trim the strips to be about a 1/4 inch short of the popsicle sticks in length. I then glued the foam and wood sticks up in layers, 5 popsicle sticks with 4 layers of foam in between, the stick ends protrude an 1/8" past the foam on each end. 6 or more of these fit nicley into a small PLANO box or school kid’s plastic ‘pencil box’.

      (conceptual sketch)

To store a dropper rig I hook a leader loop end over the popsicle stick and wind the leader end to end until I get to a hook, then bury the hook point into the foam. The popsicle sticks keep everything in neat rows, the foam has just enough give to allow enough tension on the leader to place or remove hooks.

Total cost of my project, about $4…

Scientific Anglers makes one that works well for that. It’s an insert for their System X fly boxes. It’s marked as being for their Reconnect leader systems, but works great for dropper rigs. One side of the insert has normal racks for flies, the other side has 2 foam spools that pop in and out. You can buy more foam spools separately also. DANBOB

my hat’s off to kengore, that works for me !

It took me a while to find the Scientific Anglers X box insert on their website, but I did. I don’t know why the don’t showit with their other boxes, only with there line system. I will have to keep an eye out for it in the future as I like and already use their X box system. For right now I may need to by some popsicles  and make some of my own I don’t need to carry that many at a time and the price is right. I did see Orvis has a box in their watershed line that holds one of their dropper rig racks but also holds other stuff too. That and they are buy one get one half off right now which does make them more affordable.
Thanks for the help guys… Erich

C&F makes a great “dropper wallet” that is available on their 1233 and 1244 boxes. Here is the link their (semi) English site:

Click the blue link titled “Doropper Wallet” to see a diagram of how it works.

But, I have only seen these boxes sold in Japan–it seems as if C&F’s US distributors (SA) have yet to bring them over here.
