Double Decker Sparkledun SBS

Variation on Davie McPhail’s DD Comparadun

//youtu.be/6EFL41PzmvY

The double wing gave me a way to sneak in some more hackle wraps. Tied here as a March Brown/Fall Drake; change color/size to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 125 #12
thread - Danville 6/0 tan
shuck - Congo Hair brown
rib - Uni-Stretch brown
abdomen - dubbing tan
wing - mule deer hair
hackle - grizzly dyed brown

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, wrap to point and back halfway (3/4 mark on the shank)

clean, stack, measure (hook) a clump of deer hair; spin the thread to tighten it up, take 2 soft wraps, pull firmly so it flares on top of the hook

Tried the deer hair tearing trick half a dozen times and never, ever got it right (how the hell does he do that with 8/0 Uni?) so I just trimmed the butts. Tie in CH, fold, tie in Uni-Stretch and wrap everything halfway down the bend

dub thread, dub abdomen to base of wing

twist Uni-Stretch tight, rib abdomen, tie off/trim

Part 2

tie in hackle

pull half of the wing back; take a few wraps forward (leave 1 hook eye width in front)

take a couple wraps of hackle behind and in front of rear wing

pull front wing back, set with thread dam

a couple more wraps of hackle in front; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

trim out hackle underneath

Scott
