Don't Normally Like To Complain but ............

I love this site. It is full of fantastic people who have a wealth of knowledge and often a great sense of humor. There seem to be a few, however, who must be cruising the site just looking for something that they can take offense to or at the very least correct in some minor way. It seems to be the same members over and over and over and over again. Now this isn’t to infer that these are bad people who should be banned from the hallowed halls of FAOL - but I do believe that FAOL would be and even greater site without some of this unneccessary negativism.

You mean the spelling police?

There are those who aren’t happy unless they are offended, In my experience they are people of low self esteem who feel that everyone is thinking the worse, so they read the worse into everything. Also the Internet is a wonderful tool but it leads people to say things in writing they would never say in person. In my younger days I would target these people and harass them off boards. Now I’m older and just try to ignore them.

I agree with your post, lets just lighten up and get along.

As some wise people used to say, if you cant say anything nice, don’t say nutin

Eric

Speaking for myself I do tend to offend people from time to time. I am a very blunt person and learned a long time ago that one should be honest and speak their mind. Anyone that is being honest and speaking their mind I can respect. However, I too have noticed a bit of a darker mood around the board these days.

Good advice that the best thing we can do is try to keep it light hearted and the trolls won’t have so much fun then. J.C. and L.F. do a great job of tossing the bad ones but they have had their hands full as of late. We should always help them by policing our own ranks and keeping things positive and light hearted.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

It’s WINTER!! We’ve come to expect the shack nasties at this time of year. I tend to be a bit grumpy (I know … that’s hard to believe!!) when my windows are covered in ice, and there’s no fishing. Spring will get here soon.

Some people are just that way, that no matter what the issue, they’ll be negative. Oh, well. Chalk it up to … whatever!!

There’s so much to learn from FAOL, that it’s easy to skip over the negativism.

Betty,

This just might be the thing to chase away your blues. http://www.pishtech.com/

It’s called Real World Fly Fishing. Here’s the website’s description of the program “Pishtech’s Real World Fly Fishing is the most life-like simulation of fly fishing. It features amazing photo-quality graphics and a huge collection of fishing locations. From the physics of casting to the artificial intelligence of the fish, the art of creating your own flies, and the skill of selecting the perfect fly to match the hatch, Real World Fly Fishing brings the excitement of the sport to life.”

Aaaaccckkkk! Now I have the right to be REALLY grumpy!! I don’t have Windows!! Just my handy old MAC!! Oh, well … I do have an incredibly beautiful bamboo fly rod that I’m putting the finish on as we speak!! Happy, happy, happy!!!

:frowning:

Sorry Betty! Glad your bamboo is making you very happy.

I tend to be a bit grumpy (I know ... that's hard to believe!!) when my windows are covered in ice, and there's no fishing. Spring will get here soon.

You should try Oregon, Betty. Our windows aren’t usually covered in Ice, and we have, yes…Fishing !
Steelhead, Trout and even Salmon, although this year, so far the Steelies aren’t showing in very good numbers. We’re still gettin a few on Ugly Bugs, ( Otis Bugs ) The baitslingers are gettin some Salmon, but I don’t think many flyfishers really target them. For me, when they get as far up the river as I am, They’re in pretty sad shape, I figure just leave 'em be, an let ‘em do what they came for. Lots of redds in the upper parts of the rivers, so we try not to do much wadin in the prime spawning areas, but there’s steel there if ya wanna work for it. The lakes are done for now for the most part, though a few are still good. Klamath Lake has some big ol boys but that’s over where it gets cooold. We try to keep it above freezing in my part of the state. Happy rodbuildin’ though…that’s nearly as good ! …ModocDan

Thats exactly what I was going to say

As for the spelling police, Don’t take offense if somebody corrects you, I bet they have good intentions and are just trying to help you out so you don’t make the mistake again.

The more I’m corrected, the more perfect I get! So I welcome being corrected. The Spelling Police is preferable to the Sate Police also!
Doug

I’ll usually give someone the benefit of the doubt when they get real grumpy. Everyone has a bad day now and then and we all deal with that in different ways. If the nasties persist or get to the point of being cruel (and we’ve had someone do that recently), simply ignoring that person will usually give them reason to just leave the site. If things persist, the Moderators can be asked to intervene (contact them via PM and let them know what’s going on) and the problems are dealt with quickly.

Personally, when I’m having a bad day I just don’t bother to post so I don’t offend anyone.

Joe

As Modocdan, stated; “Here, in Oregon, we don’t get that much in the way of iced up windows”. Or, sorry, I should say… “in MOST of the state”, we don’t anyway!

Living at the beach, as I do, unlike M-Dan’s area, even my local area lakes stay productive, as well as, open all year around so coupled with the steelie seasons, there really ISN’T any reason for us to get too bad a case of the dreaded Shacknasties! We just go fishing, if things get too out of hand!!

I don’t know, whether or not, this post began because of others correcting another’s spelling, or… about some of the “jump’in on”, that’s been going around the boards lately!?
I haven’t seen hardly anyone correcting another’s spelling, but I’ve seen an increase of; “The Jump’in Grumpy Experts”, when someone perhaps with less experience, posts something that a “self proclaimed expert” does not agree with. Worse, yet, it’s also seemingly happening, when someone just doesn’t AGREE with another’s post!??!

Sorry, but from this old Curmudgeon’s viewpoint, after 30 some years of making beer foam out of stream water, I’VE YET to find a single “EXPERT”, in the sport of Fly Fishing!?! I’ve met an AWFUL LOT of very SMART and TALENTED fly fishers, even met quite a few long rodders that haven’t been at it as long as I have and yet have taught me an awful lot of new and useful information. If I should ever get to the point, where I think… “Cool! I have NOTHING LEFT to learn about this sport! I’m an EXPERT, now!”, then I’ll use my rod collection in my garden for tomato stakes and my reels for chalk-snap lines!!

So, hopefully, anyway as winter drags on, (and, which, hasn’t even officially STARTED yet!?), we of FAOL can try a bit harder to NOT get the Shacknasties and end up taking it out on those; “we called our friends, when the fishing was in full swing”!??

EVERY, SINGLE, THING said on these posts has to be remembered as solely; "Another person’s personal experience and OPINION ONLY and nothing more!!! If it weren’t this way, there’d be no need for FAOL’s discussion forums whatsoever, would there be?

The LAST thing I know that I, personally, “NEVER worry about” is someone else’s grammar, and/or spelling prowess when they’re making a post! Sure, we all enjoy a “good tease”, if it’s someone we know. But if you have to intentionally bring such a thing to someone’s attention, or ridicule them, because of their mistake… then “wow” is all I can say! Well, that and; “You obviously, need a new hobby!!”

“Don’t like smilies”?, then IGNORE them! “Bad grammar, freaks you out?” learn not to read that person’s further posts, then! “Think of yourself as an EXPERT, in this sport?” then get out of it, you’ve learned it all obviously so take up something else, you can soon become an expert in.

Well, I hop I hav’unt maddde iny bad awful spellin missteaks in this post!? (or, uzed iny not goodur gramure), becuzzin I piad a lot for a realie gooder edukashun and evin tuuk a long corse in “Huked on Foniks” won tyme too!

As chief of the spelling police, you guys are making me sick. I don’t think I can keep reading. Please make it stop!!! AAHHH the humanity!

Although, I guess blatant errors are much easier to deal with than little ones that are consistently made.
