Don't forget the downwind side of the pond!

Now that I live in Oklahoma and am seeking a different quarry, I was revisiting some old fly fishing magazines looking for Bass and bluegill articles.

I read in there that said to be sure to fish the downwind side of the pond since that’s where all the food get’s washed up to.

I had 40 minutes to sneak away so I ran down to the pond to try it out.

WOO-WEE! I only wish I had my camera - 7 bass (the largest went around 2-3 lbs) and I don’t know how many bluegill and green sunfish. And they were all there in shallow water where the wind had blown all the “stuff” from the lake to.

Amazing.

Downwind. Absolutely! Glad you had a successful outing. Keep us informed.

Try the downwind side of a dam sometime at a place that’s got white bass or wipers…

And next time I’m bringing a camera! I don’t care if I’m running down for half a day or half and hour.

The fact that it’s 2 minutes from my house makes it sometimes seem a little too “casual”.

My camera straps right to my chest pack. Never leave home without it!

My favorite spring has some pretty prolific Mayfly hatches and on some days, when it’s overcast and a bit breezy, the wind blows upstream and stacks those bugs along the upwind shoreline where the big fish come out and gorge themselves. Timing truly is everything in those cases.

Kelly.

I REMEMBERED MY CAMERA!

I had a hole between meetings and I ran down for 30 minutes and cast a popper into the gunk…two twitches later I get another bass:

Here is the gunk that I cast into…yes, that’s an overturned rowboat and canoe. They used to be on dry ground - but you can see where the water is spilling out over the back of the dam…

Needless to say I would never have cast into that windblown gunk if I hadn’t been “enlightened”!

WOO-HOO! Now I can’t wait for another hole in my schedule today so I can go down there again!

Glad to see you’ve found fish in Ok. We told you warm water fishing was addictive.

By the way, really nice bass in that photo.

Jeff

boy oh boy it sure is! I created an album with a few of the bluegill and bass that I’ve caught - talk about a hoot!
