I wouldn’t want to be fishing near this dog…he puts me to shame!
Dang! Nice catch. Good dog. I don’t think that’s going to be a C&R. Jim
I think I’d like to have a fly made from that dog’s hair.
My dog taught the dog in the clip to fish. My dog is currently working on teaching the dog to clean and cook the salmon. Video w/recipe to follow.
And about then the game warden walks up…
I’m not naming any names but some of ya’ll Mama never told you, you can go to h*ll for lying just like you can for stealing.
Interesting, I seen this posted up on another board and the responses were quite different. Most thought the owner should not allow the dog to “harrass” the fish in this manner. I tend to agree if this was a spawning salmon as it appears to be in the video. Salmon have enough to contend with as it is without somebody letting thier dog chase them around. With that said I am impressed with the dog’s fishing abilities.
Kerry, you re so right on that, and lord knows I HATE trying to fish the local river with the sportsmen that bring their dogs to play and chase toys in the water.
I posted this basically cause what is done, is done…but it is rare, and I have never seen anything like this. Not something I would agree with on a regular basis for sure.
Just a WOW factor…please understand, I was hoping no one would read more into it.
You got to admit HCR’s response is funny;)
The pooch caught camp dinner for the night so it is up to the other campers to clean the fish, prep the meal, clean the dishes and lovingly scratch the provider of food behind the ears!
you know what the real pitty beside harrassing the spawning salmon is that fish slime will make a dog sick, sometime even to the point of death.

REALLY? Good to know. My Wiener dog goes out on my boat and goes nuts when I net a fish…to the point of trying to get to the fish, which he doesn’t as I would be pulling him out of the water, but he has licked the net.
I’m with Kerry on this one. It seems that the owner of the dog does not respect fish very much to not only allow his dog to do that but he rewards him with praise. How would people respond if it were say an overweight redneck chasing the fish through the spawning beds with a net? I suspect that most people would find it inappropriate at best and most likely very offensive (even if it were just to catch the camp supper).

At first I was on the dogs side till I saw the fish was in spawning colours. The owner had plenty of time to call his dog off. At that point in a fish’s spawning cycle it is almost exhausted as were other fish in there with it. Chasing them back and fourth can exhaust them to the point of death.
I live near a Kokanee spawning creek that has several fish ladders in it to help the fish up and over small concrete flood control dams. The creek goes right thru the center of town and the spawning run is quite spectacular some years. The fish rest in the deep pools at the base of the fish ladders then when rested they make the strenuous trip up the ladders. Almost every day during spawning season myself or one of my neighbours have to chase men, women and children out of the creek because they are " helping the fish by chasing them Up the fish ladder."
My neighbourhood has a sort of unofficial neighbourhood watch set up with the Dept of Fisheries phone # on speed dial.
In reality the fish in the pool never head up the ladder when frightened by these arm waving yelling clowns running back and forth in the shallow waters, they flee back downstream and then have to rest to get back up to where they were in the first place. Not to mention the stupid idiots running back and fourth in the gravel spawning beds in their attempt to assist the fish upstream. For gods sake do those people think they can replace millions of years of evolution just by yelling and waving their arms about. The fish already know where to go, leave them alone.
You should see how mad people get when You tell them to get out of the creek. I point out to them that they are liable to a $10,000 fine and a year in jail for molesting fish on a spawning ground. If they still don’t leave and trust me some of them don’t. We call the CFO who is always there in under 15 minutes at the most to give them a hefty fine.
You’d think the numerous signs all up and down the creek would be enough. It just proves that idiots can’t read.
There is something about this statement that had me laughing quite hard. I started thinking of WDFW.
I agree with Kerry, they should have called the dog off. That said, I’m with Fly Goddess in the WOW category. Only thing that really surprised me, I figured dogs would go after CATfish.
