Does your gear stay in your Vehicle?

Here in the Northeast When I pack up my vehicle for my first trip to a river in April it stays there until I unpack everything usually sometime in November. I will add to it as the season lengthens or add another rod depending on the type of fishing I will be doing. The only exception is if we are going somewhere to pick up some large object that I can’t get delivered. How about you?

Mantis;
Pretty much, if any clean up or repair is needed afterwards the gear goes back in the Jeep. I also have a tent camper and the same goes or it. Open it up clean things up and close it up for the next trip.

I don’t have a topper on my pickup.

I have rods at home, at my Lamoni office and at my leon office.

Takes just a minute to put them in the truck.I alwyas have 3 boxes of flies in the truck. That way I alwyas have flies when I can go.

Rick

Not enough room in my vehicle for gear, beer, and groceries so I schlep it out of the car after the trip is over.

Besides; being an X-NYC resident my paranoia won’t let me leave things in the car in plain sight or even in the trunk for any longer than necessary.

Out here in Seattle I would not dare most of the time. To many meth heads that will steal anything they can for their next fix.
I will once in a while keep a rod I picked up for $8 and my least expensive reel to go with it in the car if I plan to fish after work but that it. Even that stays in the house unless I plan to fish some where after work.
I had to many freinds lose gear to theifs just in the past few months from their cars both in their own drive ways of parked at the river. My own car was ripped off just a month ago and I was lucky enough to get it back in good condition and with only the owners manual missing since I keep very little in it to begin with.

I don’t anymore , I was up at a high lake fishing . There were only a very few people on the lake and at the campground it was off season . I left my good rod and reel laying in the back of the pickup while we went about 200 yds into the bush for firewood . My son had his cheap wal-mart $10.00 reel sitting right beside my Mid priced rod and reel . Someone reached in and stole the cheapo reel . The camper next to us said they saw the guy take it but assumed He was in our party and was just taking his stuff with him . At least the guy got the cheap one .

Hi,

Sounds like where I live we are pretty lucky as far as loosing gear. When our season starts on April 15 my gear goes into my 4-Runner and is there until November 30 unless I need it to move something. I like this because I never have to worry about leaving something home, which has happened to me before I started carrying everthing with me. I also have to mention my 4-Runner has all its back windows tinted to the point where you can not see through them, which kind of gives me the feeling that if they can’t see anything they will probally not take the time to break into it.

Thanks,
Alan (salmonguy)

no, but all of my gear is just a few feet from the from door. At the ready! I left my 5 wt in the car the other day. Dear Wife and I were going somewhere so I started to remove the outfit from the car. She said, “It’s okay. Just leave it there”. Life is good.

I never leave anything in my vehicle, except for maybe flyboxes. Mainly this is because I have a truck that has little storage space and no cap/tonneau. Also, it gets pretty warm here in the summer and I thought I read somewhere once that leaving rods in hot cars can break down the resins in the graphite, and that heat also doesn’t do fly line any good either. I could be wrong though. Either way, I’m not going to risk my rods safety for convenience.

If I take my stuff to go fishing after work, I’ll take it inside the building with me so I know that it is not only protected from the elements, but so I don’t have to worry about anyone stealing them. You never know what people will take these days.

Unfortunately, I’m with Hikepat on this one. The gear gets unloaded after every trip. Even out here in the country the meth heads have broken into my vehicle more than once, sitting in my driveway. All I’ve lost so far is a nice stereo. I’m not about to test the honesty of any person by leaving my gear where it can be found.

Having one vehicle stolen 10 years ago and never recovered,I only leave in the truck what im willing to lose. Its not that hard to pick up a rod and a bag on the way out the door.

Hopefully, no one will break into my vehicle because all my gear is left in it all the time. I have a fiberglass cover plus I built a false floor in the bottom of the truck bed out of 1"X6" boards. The bottom and top of the frame work is covered with plywood and the top piece is hinged at the back and has a lock at the front. Then I carpeted the whole thing and keep an old quilt laying over the whole thing. Most people who have looked through the windows of the cover think I have a mattress in the back for sleeping over night at the river since all they can see is the quilt and what looks like a gray mattress (carpet)in the back. Once the lid is unlocked and raised I have 5 fly rods with reels, vest, waders and anything else I may need for fishing anywhere I find water.

my gear is always in my truck. be it fishing or hunting for that season, unless it’s my recurve bow in which i keep in the house

oh yea, i m new here so how yall doing looking forward to gettin to know yall

Dear Mantis,

I keep most of my gear in my truck year-round, except for the bamboo rods.

I have a fierce guard dog that stays in the truck while I fish.

If you are allergic to dog slobber from licks you best stay away!

Seriously, it’d be just as easy to bust into my house when I’m gone as it is to bust into my truck when I’m fishing.

Besides, I checked, it’s all covered under my homeowner’s policy.

Tim Murphy

Got some in the “Pete”, some in the PU, none in the wagon, the camper gets loaded each trip sooo…
Sometimes the stuff in the “Pete” causes lots of noise…especially when the boss thought he “really” needed the load…fast.

Warren, I’m gonna keep a lookout for your truck. Not to take anything, but just to say, “Hello”.
That is a big problem with a pick-up truck, lack of hidden storage. Mine has an extended cab. There is a bunch of magazines, papers, and other junk in it. If you look under all of that junk you will find, more junk.

I don’t leave anything with fishing line in my truck because Nashville summers will ruin it in a day or so. I usually have a box small box with a little stuff in it. I also tend to leave a pair of forcepts in it.

Currently there are 3-4 Gierach books in it, if that counts.

No. I take it out of my car to go fishing

Other than that it lives in the trunk. Never can tell when the opportunity will arise for a quick fish. I have a great crate (plastic box) that everything other than my rods and saltw water gear fits into. There is a seperate small bag for Saltwater reels, flies miscellaneous and fanny pack.

I unload mine after every trip, but there is a point to be made for keeping an “all-around” rod in the jeep…you NEVER know…

This site’s about sharing!

I don’t leave gear in my car’s trunk - midsummer heat is not good for fly lines or waders. The plasticizers basically cook out of them, and cracking won’t be far behind.

And it’s REALLY bad for varnish on bamboo rods.
