Do you guys know a place that sells bluegill flies?

I’ve checked some of the articles on here and some of the flies that they like using for panfish. I haven’t really been able to find a good selection of flies designed for pan fish over the internet. I don’t tie my own either so thats not an option. I’m just looking to pick up a couple differnt patterns to try out over this summer. I have all the basics like poppers, spiders, and all the classic dry and nymphs you use for trout. I’m just looking for some of the flies i hear people using that they “slay” the panfish on.

Ripper,
Trout flies work!
Three patterns that are outstanding for gills are wooly worms, ants, & sponge spiders. Your fly shop/supplier should carry all 3.

This site’s about sharing!

Look at “Ricks Favorite Bluegill Flies” in the panfish archives and let me know what you would like.

We will make some sort of arrangmeent.

Rick

Ripper,

I get great results on Damsel Fly Nymphs (sz 12-14), Gold Ribbed Hares Ear, Elk Hair Caddis (sz 10-14), Foam Beatles, and several patterns that I tye. Likely a Prince Nymph and a Zug Bug would work well as well. I also caught several this weekend on a red Serendipity in size 14.

Hi Ripper,

As a dyed in the wool bluegill and
red eared sunfish fisher, I fish standard
trout flies much of the time. The fish
forage for pretty much the same food and
the flies seem to work equally well in
cold or warm waters. You can pick up a
few of your favorite poppers at Walmart
for topwater, but you’ll want a good
selection of trout fodder as well. My
favorites are nymphs, scuds and midges.

Which pattern(s) are you looking for?

Thanks for the replies guys. You’ve been very helpful. Right now I don’t really have any specific patterns that I’m interested in, but do enjoy topwater action(who doesn’t!). If any of you guys got a few favorites you wouldn’t mind tieing for me i’d be more than happy to send you money to cover whatever costs.

Rick, that suspending/floating nymph, and gilly seemed pretty cool. Just whatever your guys favorites are.

If your interested just shoot me an email or pm and maybe we can set something up!

Thank you very much again, this site is really great and has a lot of great peeople.

While there are plenty of people on this board that are capable of tying flies but there is a young upstart, Fish’n Nick, that has posted his new website [url=http://www.tied4uflies.4t.com/:acd94]http://www.tied4uflies.4t.com/[/url:acd94] in the main forum.
I am sure you could talk him into tying anything you need for a fair price.
I am not affiliated with him, I don’t even know him. Just like to see young entreprenures (sp?) get some business.

Go take a look at the fly swap board. We’ve had 2 or 3 bluegill swaps, and they have photos posted showing a pretty good selection of what guys are using. And don’t forget the little cheap poppers you can buy about anywhere. They are terrific early morning and late evening.

He’s right about the swaps, I tie most of my flies and use the swap photos for ideas all the time. For my own use, I like to use quick-to-tie and durable flies for blue-gill so I can stay in the game and not have to keep switching out chewed up flies when the gills are biting agressively. My staples are Gurgle Pop variations, Partridge and Orange variations and small Wooly Buggers.
