Wanted to tie up some PMD flymphs that called for honey dun hackle but closest I could come was cream. Grabbed a furniture touch-up pen (the lightest of the set of 3 is kinda tan)
and went from this
to this
May not be a perfect match but it’ll do and I doubt the fish will care.
Great idea when you don’t have the proper colour, but I am wondering if using touch-up pens and things leaves an odour onto the materials, thus possibly rejecting the fish to take a fly? Any comments regarding this?
Possibly; haven’t fished it yet so I don’t have any data. I’ll try one as-is and one I’ve rubbed in streambed mud (my usual procedure to negate manmade smells) to see if the fish have a preference.
Where permitted you could spray it with an attractant, some of which work really well or some anise. But, I would not think there would be enough of the fly submerged to release much odor good or bad.
