The last thread article got me thinking;
Is there a company that makes a denier size between 20, and 70 denier.
A thread in the 45 to 50 denier range would really tickle my fancy!
Thanks,
chris

UTC makes 70.
Thanks Skip,
I have the 70 denier already, but find it a little thick for smaller flies.
The 45 or 50 range would be perfect for the application that I use.
Have a great day,
chris
Gudebrod in 10/0 is rated at 45 denier.
Good luck finding them:
[ul]Uni 17/0 (Polyester) - 40 denier available in white only[/ul]
[ul]Gudebrod 10/0 (Polyester) - 45 denier and available in LOTS of colors (my personal favorite but discontinued about two years ago)[/ul]
[ul]Gudebrod 8/0 (Polyester) - 67 denier (also discontinued)[/ul]
Don’t be fooled by the “aught” numbers. There are LOTS of brands that call themselves 12/0, 17/0 and everything in between but they are thicker than the threads above. You may get lucky finding some Gudebrod if you call around or check eBay. It was also the most recent Orvis thread. You can tell if an Orvis store has it by the distinctive white embossed Gudebrod spools.
There also some low denier numbers in the gel spun arena but it isn’t the greatest for little flies.
Good luck in your search!
Giorgio benecchi is 10/0 - 12/0 strength, which would be in the range you are wanting.
It’s great thread, especially for midge tying and making small thread heads. Feather Craft is one place you could order it from, but I’m not sure if they still carry it, you would have to check.
I have the Uni-thread 17/0-40 denier.
I love the stuff! I found it at my local fly shop for about 1.50$. Man is it worth it!
Do be careful with it if you buy it, you may get addicted!
also be careful though with the hook point, the 17/0 breaks very easily into multiple strands or completely when nicked with a hook point.
Good Luck!
heres a good chart on thread

and an excellent article from chris helm in his online catalog. scroll down til u find it
Bamboozle, Uni-thread is polyester, not nylon.
"UNI Products, the leader in innovative spooled materials, comes to the rescue with our new 17/0 Trico thread. This extra-fine, white, polyester thread, is amazingly strong for its diameter. Perfect for caenis, trico, tiny baetis, and micro-caddis patterns. UNI Trico (17/0) is available on 200 yard spools. "
It also advertizes it as only coming in white.
I use sharpies in any color I want the head to be and just color the thread before making the head.
Easy fix.
DG:
Thanks! I got the info I posted from another source not UNI.
Should have checked!
I fixed it!
No worries, Bamboozle. It is just that the subject came up in chat a night or two back, so it was fresh in my mind.
I have a spool of Gordon Griffith’s 14/0 here in black. No idea the denier, tho, but it is pretty thin.
Thanks for all the great info guys!
Looks like I will be leaning towards the gudebrod 10/0,
If anybody has a good source, please send me the link.
I just heard that the Orvis thread ( 10/0 ), is identical to the gudebrod.
Seems that Orvis came out with there stuff ,just as gudebrod stoped making there’s.
Sort of makes you wonder.
Has anybody tried the 10/0 Orvis stuff?
Have a great day,
chris
Chris:
It is the EXACT same thing; Gudebrod makes/made it for them.
Gudebrod is a large company located not far from me that makes threads for many industries especially the medical industry. Fishing was a side line to them. I don’t know all of the details exactly but they lost a big dental contract so cut back to reduce expenses and made the unfortunate decision to get out of the fly tying thread business in 2006.
I was lucky enough to hear about it before the end so I got what I needed!
Orvis was a “private label” customer of theirs and it is possible that they are still making thread for Orvis but I’m not positive. The only difference between the Orvis branded thread and regular Gudebrod was the labeling on the spool and the color selection. Orvis offers WAY less colors than Gudebrod had in their full inventory.
I have seen LOTS of it lying around in Orvis shops in my travels but you’ll have to call around or e-mail. You may want to get an Orvis dealer list but NOT all Orvis stores sold it.
Good luck!
Chris,
The new Wapsi ultra GSP comes in 50 denier. It’s interesting stuff. I can’t break it. It’s not easy to cut and the slickest (slippery) tying thread I’ve ever seen. I’ve just started tying trout flies with it so I don’t have any real opinions other than I’m amazed at the strength of it.
