Brookie bait; tied Bomber style here.

hook - TMC 5212 #10
thread - Danville 6/0 brown
tail - hackle fibers brown/grizzly
rib - x-small wire gold
body - dubbing olive
body hackle - grizzly (undersize by 2)
wing - calftail white
hackle - brown/grizzly

Part 1

mash barb, start thread at 3/4 mark

clean, stack, measure (shank length) a clump of calftail; tie in tips facing forward, trim butts at an angle, dose it with Sally and wrap to the bend

strip some hackle fibers, mix, measure (2x gap width), tie in/ smooth junction with wing butts

tie in rib

dub body to 2/3 mark

Part 2

tie in hackle, wrap to bend

capture tip with wire, continue rib thru hackle, helicopter end, cover with thread; trim hackle tip

pull wing up, set angle with thread dam

tie in hackles

wrap hackles, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Out of curiousity, did you wrap you hackles backwards and then secure them with the tying thread at the back of the wing?

First turn is tight against the front of the wings, second is tight against the back, next 2 turns back to the dubbed body, then forward thru to the eye; tends to splay the hackle creating the buggy look I want. Got that from A.K. Best’s Production Fly Tying; prefer that look over hackle wrapped strictly back to front.
