I got an extra spool for X-Mas. It free spools and drag does not work? Anybody ever have this problem? I don’t see anything obvious and my original spool works fine.
My buddy had/has the same problem with a Rhythm which has the same drag system. He didn’t have an extra spool to swap so he/we figured the reel was the problem, not the spool. I don’t think he has sent it back yet for repair.
I have 4 Evolutions; all are at least three seasons old, see a lot of use and all seem to be OK. Ross should be able to explain the problem and they back-up what they sell so you shouldn’t have a problem other than inconvenience.
I’d give them a call.
Check to be sure the right hand / left hand retrieve is set up properly on the new spool.
It could just be backward from what you usually have it set up for.
Jeff
This is on the spool?
I think jeff meant on the reel.
stuff happens…
ROSS does have the best Customer Service… the best. They’ll take care of it for you & happily, too.

On my Ross Rythm reel, the part that makes it left or right hand retrieve is actually on the spool.
Oops, I found it. Yes, the left / right retrieve thing is on the spool on the Evo too. Here is a link to the instructions on the Ross website.

I believe your spool may not be defective.
Jeff
Original spool works fine so it is not the rest of the reel.

Ross has one of the best service depts in the industry. Just send everything back to them and in 48 hours of getting it they will have it on the way back to you.
You know I did e-mail the dealer and Ross before posting. I can’t believe that it was set up with left hand retrieve on the spool! (I have 3 Ross Evos and all came right retrieve which I consider normal.) Flipped over the escapement ring and it works like a charm. I will contact the dealer and Ross. Seems it would be easy to mark the box or place an info sheet in the box. THANKS, I own you one!
Koa,
Glad it worked.
Jeff
by the way, with a name of Koa, are you a guitar picker? Koa is a type of wood sometimes used on guitars.
JS.
Maybe he’s a camper?
Sorry, but no. Just a boring fly tier and fisher. I needed that spool this Sunday for my first spey class. It has the Sage Indy line on it for my Sage 7110 which I have yet to cast due to my spool saga. Thanks again!
I’ve had problems with the Evolution, Rythym and CLA, but mine appear to be defective drags, not spools. The Evolution get’s very intermittent, when wet. The Rythym has completely failed, when wet and the CLA sounds like a rusty bed spring. I contacted Brad Beefus, at Ross, and he said some of the earlier models made it out of the factory, with defrective drag systems.
Just send them back and they’ll take care of it.
I would advise against buying lottery tickets in that case… total waste of cash as you are clearly an unlucky soul ![]()
I have been selling Ross reels for 5 years, hundreds of reels, haven’t had 3 come back in all that time.
KOA, is there a possibility that the dealer(s) you bought the previous reels from set them up RHR for you?
I’m 99% sure Ross comes LHR from the factory, mine are all LHT and I have never switched them.
