nice looking tie Byron. you seem to be skilled at this type of hackling a fly, so I would like to know if you have tried palmering a fly using the twisted thread method. I don’t seem to be able to get a long enough section of feather to palmer the complete shank on anything larger than a size 14. any suggestions
Hi John. I spin the hair.
What type of fly are you thinking of Palmer “hackling” on?
Photo from Hans Weilenmann’s website “flytierspage”
I have hackled deer hair in a dubbing loop as explained in this pic.
Byron,
ive been hackling my soft hackles, wets, and all fur wets in this manner for about 5years now. it usually requires a length of hackle of 1/4" to 1/2". just enough to get about a wrap and a half. trying to palmer a fly takes a longer hackle section, perhaps an inch to an an inch and a half. I cant get an evenly spaced or even length for a section that long . you look like your a little bit better on this technique, so I was hoping you could give me some help with getting a longer section.
I much prefer this technique over wrapping a feather/hackle. it gives me more control over hackle length and gives me the ability to use every feather on a neck, and still maintain a correct hackle length.
thanks fr the help
