Deceiver hackle lenghh

What is the proper length of the hackle for making a 2/0 Leftys Deceiver…Thanks FB.

I don’t have a hook handy to measure, so make it look like this-

Developing a sense for proportion is key to becoming a better tier. Large or small, they should all look about like that. “How long should this be?” isn’t the best way to get a feel for proportion.

Good luck!

Farmer Bob,

I don’t know that there is a proper length but I just tied some up for Bass and they measure 4.25 inches long overall. They seem to cast well and the fish love them. I do however tend to tie the ones I use for saltwater a slight bit shorter, 3.5 to 4 inches. Hope this helps.

Fly Tyer Magazine had an article by Lefty on the proper way to tie the Deceiver in the spring 2005 issue. Lefty didn’t state anything in regards to the length of the hackle (ex. 2 time the hook length etc)just that it could be tied in various lengths no matter the hooks size.
It also stated that a minimum of 3 pairs of hackle should be used and on flies 1/0 and up it should have 4-5 pairs.
If you can find a copy of the Mag it’s a good article.

If you can’t find one I can photo copy the article and mail it to you.

FB,
What part are you referring to? Isn’t the hackle the tail or wing on this fly (the feather part)?
Some (myself included) used to think hackle referred to the collar of a fly.
IF that (the collar) is the part you’re questioning, it needs to extend beyond the bend of the hook.

I tried to tie these in the correct proportions (see link). You can scale the pattern easily.

Here’s a video of Lefty tying one:

Maybe that will give you a few pointers.
