De barbing hooks

Do you do this?

Looked at several pictures of flies today and most of them still had the barb.
What do you think?

Rick

Hi Rick,

Yes, I do it before tying the fly just in case I accidentally break the hook in so doing. Take care & …

Hello again Rick,

I’ll only smash the the barbs on the fly’s I know I’m tying for me at the vise, otherwise I leave that to whoever is going to use it.

All my swap flies leave here with barbs untouched…

Yes, the flies I tie to fish with get debarbed before I tie on them. I use Xuron needle-nosed pliers.

I spend many hours teaching children to tie and fly fish. All of the hooks are de-barbed. Makes it easier to remove the hook from fish or kids hats.

Bill

it is the first thing I do, even before I put the hook in the vise.

I have a cheap Thompson style vise set up off to the side that I use to “crimp” down the barb. Did break a hook tonight, first one of many!! I also test the hook by sticking in my shirt cuff to see how it pulls out!

Most of mine are de-barbed before the hook goes in the vise.

Tim

I de-barb mine at the river. I guess it would be handiest for me to do it at the vise. But that would make sense which is probably why I don’t do it that way.

I debarb my flies.

I find that I get as many fish with barbless as with barbed hooks . I no longer spend time getting hooks out of my cloths , skin or the net . Plus if you get a barbless hook stuck in you it is way easier and less painful to pull out . I have a cheap vise I bought unwisely it is good for mashing down the barbs but nothing else .
I tie all barbless now , some of my buddies were a little upset because I supplied them with free flies and I can’t convince them that barbless are way easier to use and just as effective as barbed . What a shame , they have to buy their own now .

My personal flies usually get debarbed before tying.

I leave the swap flies barbed to help hold the toe tags on and to allow the end user to decide the fate of the barb.

I always debarb the hook prior to tying the fly just in case the hook breaks off in the debarbing process. When I participate in fly swaps, I do not always debarb the hooks as I as I don’t know the preference of the person receiving the flies.

Always, except for swap flies, if I need to purchase new hooks.

On ALL my hooks. Even my huge trebles on my muskie lures are now debarbed! Hasn’t cost me any fish!
