Anybody use this [url=http://flyfisherman.com/skills/dwnoknot/index.html:705d8]technique[/url:705d8]? I just set up a 6 weight line/3X leader connection. I won’t have a chance to fish it for a couple weeks. Jerking and pulling on it doesn’t seem to bother it though.
Haven’t tried it. Sorry can’t help here.
Did you have to get the $25 kit or DVD the article mentioned to show how it is actually is done or did someone show you how it is done ?
It sounds like a good idea…
No just the bottle of Zap A Gap, one of the better half’s sewing needles, and a pair of pliers. Took about 10 minutes to do. If you go to the bottom of the page and click on next, you will get the full instructions. I rarely change my leader butt. I just tie different tippets. Sometimes a graduated tippet ie, 2ft of 4X, then 18 inches of 5X, or whatever.
Ok. Thanks. I’ll scroll down on the article and hit next to get the full instructions.
Hopefully somebody on the board can give you an opinion in regards to this set-up.

Shimizaki- $17.95
Whitlock- $25.00
Normand- Pricless
Fly Goddess,
I should have known the experts on this board would have been all over this long ago. I am in Normands camp on this one. Whitlock has to make a living too though I guess. Pretty cool that he gives it away first, and then sells it later.
We had the cork indicator with the needle in it and even the little needle with a brass end on it, but if your eye sight isn’t what it use to be, it is a challenge. The little plastic holder and the needle with the Shimazaki, could be done blind folded and easy as heck on the fingers.
The Zap-A-Gap and sanding the end of a leader is all the same, just getting to that point CAN be a piece of cake.
I did have a failure once, when I was snagged in a tree.
I think the branch may have actually caught right on the joint and peeled it open. I had a lot of tension on the line before it broke, much more than could put on the tippet.
My dad used to use a similar technique back when. The difference is that he heated the needle for easier access into the fly line, and he didn’t thread the needle with the leader. He just created a hole into the line with the needle, coated the last 1/2 inch of leader with super glue and shoved inside the hole. I used to use it, but ran into issues with larger diameter leaders. When usin it we had both caught plenty of fish with it, but never a 100lb tarpon, so I can’t say if it wouldn’ve worked for that. It does, however, make stringing the rod and passing that connection through the guides flawless. And, if you cast a tight loop, reduces tangles in a major way.
I’ll probably give this one another shot. Thanks for sharing.
FG…I’m curious why you deleted all your posts in that link :?:

I am not sure, maybe a temper tantrum
Last summer a friend brought old copies of Flyfisherman Magazine to our fish camp. In going through a 1996 issue, I came across an article entitled “Natashe’s Crazy Glue Leader Splice”. I gave it a try and about everyone else ended up using it all summer. We loved it. No one experienced any problems. Its easy to do and you don’t need a needle. Basically, you dip the end of your flyline in acetone or similiar solvent and remove about 1/2 inch of coating from the core. Insert your leader butt into the exposed line core as far as you can and saturate with Crazy Glue, SuperGlue, or ZapaGap. Done. It was not available back in 1996, but I ended up coating the connection with Knot Sense but it is not necessary. No kits. Easy, and done in minutes. Give it a try.
I’ve never tried it, but I am going to now, Thanks for the link. I have a suspicion that all my lines will have the connection soon.
Are all fly line tips created equal?
No they are not. Some do have a core (SYLK for one) plus the clears. With the core it is impossible to use a needle knot.
I kinda gave up on the knotless leader/line. I like Furled leaders and then I may switch to a long flouro. Make the loops small enough, there IS NO problem.
The “core” I was referring to in my post is the woven material type. The Crazy Glue splice would not be feasible on a mono type core found in clear lines. Would the Whitlock splice work on a sold monocore type line?
