danbob's diamondback

I was searching for some propeller flies, because, you know, the lakes here in Oklahoma ain’t exactly clear.

Low and behold I ran across a fly that might just work, Danbob’s diamondback.

The only problem is that I have only one set of rattles and they have sentimental value, so I’m not willing to use them.

Anybody have any suggestions as a substitute.

they make rattles for flies. I know a couple shops in my town that sell them. your shops probably carry a few

Down at the bottom of the page he sells rattles. Cant remember his name right off, but the guy that runs this is a great guy, very knowledgeable, and more than willing to help and ship.

Besides, real snake rattles get soft and squishy after a while in the water!
While the article and fly are both tongue in cheek—
–You can buy glass rattles to tie into flies, I get mine from Hareline. Any Hareline dealer should be able to order them for you.
–I actually do use snake skin for shellback on some of my larger patterns. The smaller the scales, the better, and a coating of flex cement like Exoflex or Val-A tear mender will keep the scales in place during rough use (such as in a fish mouth).
DANBOB

Danbob,

That story just cracked me up. Thanks for sharing your gift here.

That rattlesnake fly looks awesome; what an imagination.

Soloman,

If you really want to ‘duplicate’ that fly with something that would actually make noise in the water (real snake rattles won’t), it can be done and you can keep the ‘look’.

Melt a ball on the end of some heavy mono, thread on some glass beads in a proper color and ascending sizes, then tie the mono to the hook, leaving enough ‘slack’ between the beads so that they will click together a bit.

If you can find a bead store, they actually make glass beads that imitate snake rattles…or, if you know a glass beadmaker, they aren’t hard to create with basic skills…

Cool fly.
