Damsel fly vs Dragon fly spinners

I don’t know why I really care but I like to know what I’m doing/tying…

Do damsel fly spinners have horizontal wings …or vertical?

If I tie these spinners horizontal are they technically dragon flies?

There could be a little practicality here…I fish a lake that has way more damsel flies than dragon flies…so vertical or horizontal???

Their wings are straight out to the sides usually. Might have 1 pair to the sides and 1 at an angle.
This site might help out.

I’m asking about the spent adults…

I know healthy adults …dragon flies = horizontal…damsel flies = vertical…wings that is…

I have a pretty good file of both damsel and dragon flies but I find patterns of spent damsel flies tied with horizontal wings …is that accurate or not?

When trying to get the wing position correct for Damsel Spinners, the wings are usually splayed out, they are only along the abdomen when alive and at rest, Dragonfly wings are always outspread whether at rest or dead. another to add to this family of flies is the Demoiselle of which there are two species across here, Damsels and Dragonflies being the predominant species.

I am currently running a Damsel Fly / Dragonfly challenge for dry adult patterns and will be posting the entries at UKFLYDRESSING very shortly so you will see some interpretations of both flies from some really excellent tyers.
