Dad's old rod

Well, like a lot of others I would like to be able to use my dad’s bamboo rod, but I hated it the last time I cast it, and even when I took all the winding thread off that was covering a split, glued the repaired area and put a tiny band around it for support, I still hate it. I’m thinking of a banty out of the top two sections, and wondered if I can just slip a grip and reel seat over the ferrule of the mid section and try it that way, or do I need to take off the ferrule and commit to breaking it up? If I do this and still hate it, I’d like to be able to go back to the three pieces. The banty should be a lot lighter, shouldn’t it?

You can make a banty by making a new handle with a female ferule and a 1/4" dowel and new cork and reel seat. You can make a reel seat from cork and cap and ring and then leave the rod intact. Makes a nice convertible system. Keep and mid and tip and it will have a nicer flex that way.

I think I see - with the female ferrule I could just take the grip off like another section?

You might be able to find the right size ferrule on an old rod , but buying a new one is probably the way to go . This set - up works pretty good if you skip the first guide when lining up . However , occasionaly your line will snag on that first guide .

Guess I could just replace the first guide with a stripping guide? There’s one on the butt section. Or take off the first guide and leave a space?
