scuse me for being lazy…i tried the keyword search, but seems like everything was either about the czech republic or nymphing or nymphing in the czech rpublic, but not “czech nymphing” (granted i only looked at the first five or six pages, but i am an impatient surfer and decided to make use of the board here for help…
anyway, to the point…i am reading a lot about this style of fishing. no one locally has a clue what i’m talking about…from what i’ve read, it seems that it is “high sticking” with a 2 or 3 nymph set-up…is this a gross over- simplification?
specifically, i have seen two different comments saying that you 1) lead or pull the nymphs just slightly faster than the surface current or 2) lead or pull just slightly slower than the surface current…both can’t be right! any other specifics would be appriiated as well.
so once again, teach me, i need to learn…
thanks
one more cast and i’ll leave…well maybe one just one more
I have been Czech/Polish nymphing for the past few months. The flies are weighed in grams and ver, very heavy. I recently bought a 10 foot rod for this. Ryan Barnes is on the US fishing team and has gotten into this in great detail and has been helping me every step of the way. I have had a little success, but each time I get closer to handling it and actually caught a fish today. Here, we cannot do the third flie so I am trying two. It is a different ball game all together but, puts that spring run off back in the game.
andean angler, very good site, adding that one to my favorites. It is indeed, short sticking. Thanks!

There are many different variations, of the “Czech Nymph”. There is a “Caseless Caddis”, in the Fly of the Week Archives, that could be considered a “Czech Nymph”!
Caseless Caddis
Personnally I used a curved scud hook. Some very thin thread. Flatten Non-Lead Wire, for weight wrap. I dubb (very thin) abdomen with a darker shad of dubbing of the thorax. I apply a hot spot (bright dubbing)in between the thorax and the abdomen. The casing is just, strips of sandwich bag, with some tippet material for the ribbing. I use a sharpie pen to darken the casing over the thorax.
To get the weight correctly aligned, start 2/3 back from the eye and wrap forward, then reverse the wrap halfway back. Use flattened wire weight, so the body stays thin, and the thread will not get caught between the weight wraps.
