cutt fishin from the sled.....

Okie Dokie, now I’m drooling all over the keyboard. Nice looking sled, Kerry. After going after Sea Run Cutts with Steve Buckner in his sled, VEE wants one. Maybe I should say she wants me to have one so she can fish and I can steer the boat.

Ron, not sure of Steve,s method but the way we do up here on the mighty Skagit is to anchor up just outside of likely cutt water, two fishermen work the water casting towards shore, one on the bow platform and one aft. Once satisfied that all the cutts that could be caught in the piece of water have been caught, we pull the anchor and drift down river to new water. We will repeat this process working long sections of the river. Sometimes taking several hours to fish a couple hundred yards of good looking water. It is my experience once one cutt is found there will be more. They seem to pal around.

Kerry,

"Bout the same thing, plus a lot of wading with the boat beached. We had always used his drift boat before, that was VEE’s first time in a sled and being able to go up river instead of drifting down. She liked that, plus getting from good hole to good hole was a bit quicker.

A little later in the year when the fish are in we can run 20 or more river miles looking for them if needed. Now, it seems most fish are low in the system so I am staying down in the tidal influenced water. Soon, we start to move up river.

On a bit of a sad side note. This past weekend was a bit unsettling fishing the lower river. A teenager had drowned in the river above where I fish. They still hadn’t found the body when the above pictures were taken a day later. I talked to a Sherriff’s deputy on shore and one of the search boats stopped by while I was fishing, both asking me to keep an eye out. Not something you want to think about when attempting to enjoy some time on the water. Very sad. Prayers to the young victim’s family.

Love those uncluttered, non-fouling decks.

Now if we anglers could just manage to get off the cast without stepping on the running line…

Best, Dave

I decided, years ago, that, if I only had one leg I could still somehow manage to step on the line while casting. I’ve been fishing the Stillaguamish for sea-run cutthroat for the last month with good results and am making my first trip this year to the Skagit on Friday. Ya gotta love this time of the year, especially a little later when the coho start to show.

Might as well toss in a few pictures of recent fish as well as a shot of my favorite summertime bird, the Cedar Waxwing.
