Got on a dyeing jag after watching a few Davie McPhail vids - hackle and body biot were not exactly the right shade, but turned out okay (golden yellow first, then 90 seconds in the olive).

hook - Mustad 94840 #12
thread - UTC 70 woodduck
tail - hen dyed golden olive
abdomen - turkey biot dyed golden olive
thorax - peacock herl
buds - biot yellow/orange
hackle - hen dyed golden olive

Part 1

mash barb, start thread one eye width back from eye

prep hackle; tie in by tip, then wrap thread to bend

measure (shank length) a clump of hackle fibers; tie in

tie in moistened biot (sub for dyed peacock quill of which I have none); looking for a smooth body on this fly so put the notch side up

brush the shank with a bit of Sally, then wrap biot to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

even tips on a pair of biots; tie in on either side of thorax

Part 2

tie in some peacock; wrap thorax

pull biots forward; tie off/trim

wrap hackle, stroking fibers back; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN (changed the light source setting for these shots to remove the yellowish cast)

No gold so I tied a few up in yellow. I think the pan fish will like them.

The biots represent the wing buds, correct? Nice tie.

Bruce,

Thanks. Yes, they’re supposed to be wing buds.
