Cross referencing hook types

I was interested in a fly that Roger Stouff uses for breem. The jitterbee. I E-mailed him and he directed me to a place where I could find the recipe.I went to a local fly shop and asked for that brand and model # hook. They didn’t carry that so I asked if Mustad, TMC, or Gamakatsu would carry a similar style. The 17 year old shrugged and said “Idunno”. I asked if there was a hook reference guide with cross references between manufacturers. From the glazed look on his face I knew I’d ventured into the non-comprehension zone. Any help out there Thank you. (This was Gander Mt. usually pretty helpful)

Coach: Stackpole Books has published a book on the subject: “Hooks For the Fly” by William E. Schmidt.
I believe its currently available.

Coach,
sjh is correct. I bought that book at Border’s Books several months ago.

I saw it in the half price book store is Des Moines last weekend.

I was given a copy.

What hook are you trying to cross reference?

Hi Coach,
In addition to the suggested book which is a good one, you might want to have a look at the mustad hook comparison chart that is on line at kilroy’s. Web addy is:

You will find comparisons for most other brands there too. It is a good thing to print out and keep at your tying desk. Have fun!

Coach Robb,
Check your email. I sent you a table I put together that includes Mustad, Eagle Claw, Daiichi, DaiRiki, and Tiemco hooks.
Mike

Thanks everybody. I appreciate the information.

Hook and Hackle also has one, but I’m not sure if it’s as comprehensive as the other one listed:

I think your problem is that the hook that Roger uses is actually a short shanked bait holder hook made by Eagle Claw. You should be able to find them at Wal Mart. Just mass the barbs down on the shank before you start. I’m not surprised that the kid at the fly shop had no idea what you were talking about.

I can tell you that fly is a killer for blue gill, or as Roger calls them brim.

Care to post the location of the recipe? Sounds like a good one.

I tie flies to give the fish something to laugh about.

You’ll find it under Warm Water Fly Patterns.

Just because this is a Louisiana fly it works just as well up here in yankee land.

Gander Mountains Motto is kind of a smaller version of Bass pro or Cabelas. They had a whole rack of Eagle claw products. The also carry Mustad, Tiemco, Partridge, and Gamakatsu. I contacted the manager and am sending him a copy of one of the comparison charts. I’m tying the Jitterbee on a Gamakatsu bait keeper circle hook with an upturned eye sz. 10. First experience using a circle hook. What is the experience of “hookability” with this type of hook. It does take some getting used to tying the first couple. Thanks again everybody.

I don’t know how a circle hook will work as a fly hook. I have used them with conventional tackle. With a circle hook there is no hook set. You either simply apply pressure or start reeling. The theory is that the fish will pull and the hook automatically rotates to the corner of the mouth and the fish somewhat hooks itself.
