Cricket Pattern??

The place where I fish has tons of black crickets in the grass. Most come out at night  . I think the Bluegill etc must feed happily on them. Would the "Madam X’ tied with black deer hair and black rubber legs be a good imitation of this critter?? I would fish it wet. Probably put some lead wrapping on it and fish it with a VOSI(Vertically Orientated Strike Indicator) http://www.laflyfish.com/flies/vosi.php

Thanks!

Kahuna

Kahuna,

Shouting is not necessary. We can hear you.

I like the Letort Cricket. Easy to tie and it works.

Allan

Wasn’t shouting…THIS IS SHOUTING  :!: All caps.
My eyesite isn’t that good. Please have patience with us oldtimers to this Forum.

I’ve tied the Letort Cricket. Wanted to try something new.

Thanks

Try a simple folded over piece of foam 1/8 " wide tied off to leave a little head and then add a small black hackle right over the spot you tied off the foam. Fish it dry with a little wiggle action.

Would the "Madam X’ tied with black deer hair and black rubber legs be a good imitation of this critter??

Has anyone tried it before??

Thanks!
KAHUNA

I also like the Letort Cricket. I will be adding rubber legs this winter to mine though. I think a “Madam X” would be good also.

Try a google for matt’s Cricket…It’s a great pattern That was featured in Fly Tyer around 2001-ish…I use this pattern exclusively…the letort is an ok general pattern if your local crickets look like black grass hoppers… :?

Thanks bill… I appreciate your help

If you want something different, you might try a black Turck’s Tarantula. You could easily top the wing with something bright for visibility.

Mike,

Here are some link ideas.

This one can use wool instead of deer hair for a subsurface pattern (I would use weight like a black beadhead and maybe either a yarn body instead of the closed cell foam or use open cell foam body).

Kahuna,

I tried google for the pattern outta curiosity…and had NO luck at all with it…Should you run into the same probs…Let me know and I’ll see about getting a Pic and Recipe posted or a sample Cricket, foam used for the under body,Leg material and recipe. Directly to you…Which ever would be most convenient for you…

Bill

I didn’t have any luck either on the search. Could you post the pattern somewhere??

THANKS!!

KAHUNA

I’ve never fished it wet, but I have tied smallish madame X’s in black to fish on the surface. They seem to work just fine on bluegills and small bass. Some of these other pattern look like fun, too. Might have to give 'em a try.

Recipe as follows:

Hook: Dry of your choice, I Tye this pattern in a #10 black and #14 brown. Mustad 3399 and 3366 also work nicely!

Thread: 6/0 color to match of course  Start at about mid shank with a very firm tight base all the way into the start of the bend.

Underbody: Sheet Packing foam…(Rolled to form a tight cylinder, Tied in on the rear 1/3rd of the hook as a ball.More on this later…

Tail & Shellback: Deer or Elk Body Hair.Tied in by the tips, Leaving a very short tail of 1/8th to 1/4 In.Stacking the clump first helps here.

Over body: Peacock herl or Punch yarn. After tying in and forming your ball of foam,Tailing and herl/Yarn…Coat the Foam Ball generously with Flexament. Then Immediately follow with wrapping your over body material. Of late I like to twist three strands of herl around a strand of yarn…as the Punch yarn adds a good bit of floatation to the fly… The Flexament really gives the herl some strength…you can use either or, Or both…Pull the Butt ends of the deer over the top and tie down… Leaving the but ends to later blend into the spun head. I like to leave a few longer pieces of the head hair jutting out the sides of the body back near the legs…Just looks buggy-er to me…

Legs: Flexi Floss.

Head: Spun and clipped Deer Hair.

If you lack any of these material’s feel free to email me and I’ll get a sample cricket and packet of whatever you might need to get you going out ASAP…

The packing foam that was used in the original and I still use is of the type that Rifle Scopes and other delicates are shipped in…Several tying vises I’ve purchased also came wrapped in this same material…

Bill, Thanks for going out of your way to help me. I have all I need to make the fly you describe. THANKS!!!

Here’s yet another possibility–Taylor’s Fat Albert. I’ve been tying these in hopper colors all summer, but remembering this thread, last night I tied a few in black on #12 dry fly hooks. Tested them tonight and just waylayed the bluegill and got two chunky little LMB’s into the bargain! I fished it dry, but I have the feeling that if you added just a little weight to sink it really slow so the rubber legs have a chance to wiggle a bit…

Here’s a link to the recipe and a fairly decent picture:
