crappies on poppers ....

Second time it’s happened this spring. Caught several crappies up to 11" on a white #10 popper with red tail. They came out of the water and back down on the popper when they hit! I tried to tell 'em that I have a bad heart and that I really didn’t need this!! LOL They didn’t pay any attention, tho. Also caught a few 9" gills and more smaller ones. Black clouds over us all morning and we pushed it too far. After it started raining we picked up at least an inch of rain in the boat running back to the launching ramp! Of course the rain jacket was in the car. But all in all a good morning.

Hey beadleech, that’s neat, huh! The biggest crappie I’ve ever caught (13.75") on a flyrod came from the bank about 4 feet to inhale a fly just as it hit the water surface. I’ll never forget that v-wake.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Donald, it was early in my “career” and I guess I was dumb-founded and paralyzed by the sight. Up to that point in the day I had been catching redbreasts and gills.

He simply hooked himself, and I pulled him in.

NWK - used to fish a group of small lakes in a chain north of here that was just lousy with 15-20" pike. In the spring you could work a popper along - pop, pop, pop - and watch 4 or 5 [or more] “torpedo” wakes zeroing in on the popper. One morning I was pop, pop, pop and one wake headed for the popper. For some reason I just stopped my retreive. The pike just zoomed across the path of the popper missing it completely! The fish swirled around a bit but never did find the bug. I couldn’t fish for a while 'cause I was laughing too hard!! [This chain is pretty well ruined now from the farm field run off in the spring. You can almost walk on the water with all the mud. Shame.]

Anyway - tite lines.
