My neighbor killed a couple of coyotes that were a bit too brash about helping themselves to his turkeys and chickens. I’ve never tied anything with coyote, but he’s asked me if I could use some. What flies work well with coyote fur? Which areas of the hide are most useful? He poked some pretty good holes in them with a 30-06 and deer loads, so they aren’t much good for anything that uses the whole hide.

Lew, the ausable ugly is a NY pattern that uses coyote for the tail and in the body.
It makes some great looking clousers!!!

Wish I could remember the name of the fly that gained a lot of popularity about 5 years ago made with coyote guard hairs. I’ll sit down in a quiet spot, sip a little ice tea(this is the desert, after all, even though it’s a whopping 40 degrees), and maybe it’ll come to me.
Thanks for the input troops. Those are good suggestions. I’ll snatch a patch, and see what I can come up with. Heaven forbid that I try to come up with something on my own. The idea is to catch em’, not scare em’.

If one of those are females get the urine stained fur and you can use it in several patterns that call for pink dubbin. You can also mix the stained fur with other dubbin to give it some UV properties.

I can’t tell you what fly works well with coyote fur, but I can tell you that a 243 with a 60 grain hollow point works well ON coyote fur, that is if you are trying to collect some.
Seriously, though, a few years ago I had a coyote tail in my garage, but when I noticed it got nasty/odorous it immediately got pitched. I had looked it over pretty good before pitching it, though, and I think it would have made great winging material for streamers. If the stuff is light enough in color, it could be dyed to some nice colors too.
It had a certain kinky type character to the fibers, so rather than being straight and compact as a wing, a small amount would make a bulky wing . It also looked rough (non-smooth) enough that I thought it would tie in well and not slip out easily. The nice thing about the fibers having kink to them is that makes them bulky so that the they might appear more translucent on the fly, a good thing in my view.
If I had some coyote I would dye it up as a few colors, and then would tie up some old standard streamer patterns with it to test.
