Cornucopia of warmwater flies

I didn’t take pictures yet of some stuff I made for ice fishing…but here’s some stuff I’ve done in spare time during the past couple of weeks:

Here’s a shad imitator I made…I put some mirrored tape beneath the mylar tubing to it’ll flash nicely. 2 views to show the fly, and the flash! Its a fairly large fly…probably just under 3".

Sort of a silvery shad imitator:

A Thunder Creek Minnow

A soft-headed Woolly Worm:

A Wigglebug for bass:

A WiggleBug for bluegills:

A fly that should behave something like a soft jerkbait or twitchbait in the water:

Some closed-cell foam bluegill topwaters:

A couple of bluegill poppers using walleye rig floats:

A bluegill bug:

A mohair “bugger” pattern:

A bizarre nymph-ish concoction:

A “bread fly” I hope works for carp/grass carp:

A rubber “beadhead weenie” fly:

Dave, all those flies look exceedingly productive! I have no doubt that you will get some hook ups with those.

Great ties!

You’re too kind, Scott! Its way more patterns than I probably need, but its fun to tie up a variety. :stuck_out_tongue:
Actually, there’s a number of additional patterns I still want to tie before Spring.

Nice bunch of flies Dave. I have made some poppers with the walleye floats & they work pretty good. Another thing you might want to try is some floating jig heads.

Tim

Right, I’ve seen that pattern! I’m sure I’ll give that a go one of these days too.

Hi FishnDave;

Nice flies!

What type of foam did you use for your top water patterns??

It looks much thicker/softer than craft foam.

Very observant!!
Last year I generally used the 2mm foam sheets. I usually used double-thickness of those. Lately I’ve been using a thicker foam. I’m not sure how thick it is exactly, but…uh ok here’s my confession…my kids had each decorated these foam things that hang on a door handle. I’ve been ogling the foam for some time now, and the kids didn’t seem to mind when I finally decided to utilize their creations to my some of my own.

I think you can get this stuff at craft stores, and I definitely saw some at the local Wal-Mart in the craft section. Comes in different colors.

Here’s a link I found that appears to be the stuff:

And another one:

The ones I’m using have wavy edges, although I’d prefer straight sides.

Saw some of the door hangers @ Jo Ann’s yesterday…I didn’t realize the hangers were different thickness…JoAnn’s is having a sale…and there’s always the coupon:rolleyes:.

In my constant hunt for “Non-Rainy’s” fuzzy foam, I frequent the craft stores () and I run into the plain ol’ foam a lot. If you have a Michael’s or Hobby Lobby close, there is a large gamete of foam to get - unfortunately, no furry/fuzzy foam.

The 2mm is probably the most plentiful and the most common.

Often, some sheets come in the 3mm (my favorite for Chernobys and hoppers).

Also, the 4mm foam or Door Hangers are a bit more dinero, but present. Dave, they have the regular rectangle ones, too - saves cutting 4 straight lines which is hard for me:D

I guess we are not highjacking since we’re talking about what FishinDave used …and he’s participating…

Re: foam…I’m seeing some now that has a glitter side…anyone used or ideas how to use it?

Re: cutting straight lines…an old fashioned cutting board…the one with the long cutting arm…works well…available at Harbor Freight @ a reasonable price.

I’ve seen the glitter foam. Looks interesting, but I chose not to buy it that particular day.

I’m looking for Furry Foam, too. I’ve read that it can be found at certain stores under the name of “Vellux”, which is a blanket. I think I read that JC Penney was one store that has it…and I might have seen some at either Target or Wally World.

Actually, doing a googly-moogly search for “Vellux Blanket” turns up a lot of sources.

Hey…there’s a sale on it right now…$14.99 for a whole blanket!

I might have to get one…

I do need to stay warm while tying:-P For some reason, my gut is telling me this ain’t the stuff:p

You may be right…but its worth a look. Maybe I’ll stop by WalMart on the way home tonight.

The JC Penny website gave this description (paraphrased):

Flocked 100% nylon surface fibers create an ultra-soft, velvety finish that won’t mat or pill. Insulating polyurethane foam provides lightweight warmth.

That sounds promising. Anyway, if I find the stuff, I’ll report back tomorrow.

I read some time ago that the guy that started the furry foam thing did indeed get it from a blanket.

Trouble is it seems to me that it’s a high price for way too much …and only one color…could order all colors from a fly shop for less …

Hi Fishindave;

thansk for the info on foam, picked up a couple of yellow “wall crosses” from Michaels today for $.99 ea.

For the glitter foam, when I find what I bought, I am going to try to roll it on the outside of a popper that I drill out of foam. That way the shiny side will show.

Three more boxes to look through and get organized.
