That was a cool video. Thanks for finding and sharing it. I could go for a job like a few months of the year.
Roy
You wouldn’t have to break my arm to volunteer for that job.
Thanks, Norm, for that from an Oregonian…
Good find Normand, that went in my favorites.

Why do they refer to the Steelhead as Salmon or did i miss something?
Check out the second paragraph about halfway down Rich…the scientific name for steelhead was changed…still steelhead though…

Well…i’ll be dipped ! I am surprised i haven’t heard them called Salmon anywhere else so far.
Just another educational day on FAOL. Dang thats great!
Thanks George.
Ok, now there are two jobs that I would like to have. That one in the film clip or a lighthouse keeper on an otherwise deserted island. 8T
ive always wanted to be a “shepherd” or a “viking” but watching fish go by wouldnt be too bad! :D:D
I’m devastated …you mean our Pacific steelhead are really salmon:confused:
How can a rainbow trout be a salmon???
To answer that I can only think that rainbow weren’t native to the left coast so someone decided they weren’t rainbows???
BTW MM…did you know about this guy?
…no…
Ok duckster…at the head of the article you’ll see the title Oncorhynchus mykiss- The Steelhead Trout
That’s the ‘new’ name. Read from both paragraphs i guess and you’ll note that the scientific name was changed from Salmo gairdneri Richardson, to oncorhynchus mykiss. The first name makes it sound like they’re salmon and the second name kinda lumps them in with salmon…i’m getting confused too but i know that steelhead aren’t salmon and i know (as i know you also know this stuff) that steelhead and salmon have some clear differences, for example that salmon die after spawning while steelhead don’t.
In fact, in more that one book on steelhead that i’ve read, i’ve noticed
that steel can ‘salt’ as many as 6 and even 7 times. Apparently steelhead
and salmon can’t mix so that’s another fact that i believe keeps them
separate. Anyway, not wanting to hijac too far off topic and yessir, i do
know of this stream and this watcher. I need to go up there with a 6 or 12
pretty soon and spend part of the day there. Next time it’s hot i think.
